SLED To Investigate Bobby Harrell

S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley’s administration will investigate a complaint filed against one of her political arch-rivals – embattled S.C. House Speaker Bobby Harrell.

According to The (Columbia, S.C.) Free Times, Attorney General Alan Wilson has referred an ethics complaint against Harrell to the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) – which is part of Haley’s cabinet.

“Consistent with our long-standing policy, we are requesting that SLED assign an agent to conduct this inquiry,” deputy Attorney General John McIntosh said in a statement.

Wow … Harrell is set to face a criminal probe conducted by his longtime nemesis? No wonder the jackals are circling at the S.C. State House …

Earlier this week, FITS reported exclusively on the not-so-secret race to replace Harrell as Speaker of the S.C. House of Representatives – a contest which is being driven by rumors of multiple investigations into Harrell’s various shady dealings.

Harrell is facing a host of allegations – including the receipt of improper reimbursements, misappropriation and misreporting of campaign funds and influence peddling.

What specific allegations were contained in the report provided to the Attorney General? It’s not immediately clear, although sources close to the office tell FITS the information Wilson’s office was provided “represents (the) bulk but not all evidence turned over to (SLED) by Macintosh.”

In other words there could be dirt on Harrell yet to be publicized … which is good news for those of us who want to see him go down.

Will that happen though? Vote in our poll (and post your thoughts in our comments section) below …

I was a witness in a mess which SLED investigated. The politician involved was absolutely guilty as all hell. But politics took over and it was brushed under the rug. I didn’t have a dog in the fight, but I certainly learned that SLED investigators can be “swayed” by higher ups.

Amen Sarge,
I had a similar situation involving 2 guilty as hell!..It was swep under the rug.
Under Robert Stuart and Mark Keel nothing will happen. Neither will ruffle political feathers.
I also know of a case where they put a poor innocent SOB through 2 years of a witch hunt investigation, with NO evidence, for political reasons!
SLED leadership AIN’t what it use to be!

Im unaware of any time in its history when SLED was anything, other than a political agency,at the whims of whoever was in power at the time.Except for the lboratory and forensic components,it serves no useful purpose.if the investigative function ceased to exist,no one would notice it was gone, except those naive enough tobelieve their “investigation” is really an investigation!

Again I say, nothing to see here, move along. You really don’t think all of those “in power” are going to hang the most powerful person in the state out to dry, do you, really?

Back to our lives of quiet desperation. Same ol’ same ol’.

It was never what you think it was. SLED has been corrupt as far back as I can remember the grown-ups talking about it and I’m 61.

I love that “Earlier this week, FITS reported exclusively.” Yeah, the reason you reported it “exclusively” is because half of it was untrue and the other half unverifiable.

I don’t expect anything to come of the investigation, the rug is obviously hiding a mound of corruption, but if even they find anything, the sled agents jobs are in jeopardy.

In the scheme of things this Harrell thing is small potatoes. The ongoing looting of the Retirement System (25 billion) and the lax accounting at Health and Human Services (7 billion) are two that come to mind. Both have made immense fortunes for those involved and yet no one ever pays a price. I don’t care about Harrell either way. But come on, get serious, go to the big money first.

There is no one more powerful than Harrell in his role as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, which oversees a $22 billion state budget. Them ain’t small potatoes.

SLED has files on all sorts of misdeeds — check out the folder on Clemson for example — but nothing is ever done. I’m not sure what SLED stands for, but it sure as hell isn’t Law Enforcement. They will do an “investigation” so that someone high up has dirt, but nothing will be done.

When was the last time they actually did anything related to an ethics charge? Seriously — when? They’ll come down on individual low-level citizens like a freakin’ army. But level a charge against a power group and watch nothing happen.

SLED will sweep this under the rug, same as they did with the Obstruction Of Justice issues when Columbia Fire Dept was punishing a Fire Marshal for doing his job and citing Benedict College for fire code violations and same as they are doing with the Lexington Crime Ring. They have been a pitiful joke for many years, now.
