An investigation is currently underway into the alleged theft of undisclosed “items” from the S.C. National Guard Armory in Williamston, S.C. Accused of perpetrating the theft? Two members of the S.C. State Guard – a totally superfluous military organization which is “commanded” by S.C. Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom.

S.C. State Guard personnel, who serve a “support” role to National Guardsmen, regularly conduct drill exercises at the Armory – or at least they did until this incident took place. S.C. State Guard drill privileges have been “indefinitely suspended” in the wake of the alleged heist, a source in the National Guard tells FITS.

Neither entity was immediately available to comment regarding the alleged incident – which took place in “late 2012.”

Sources tell FITS a pair of as-yet-unidentified State Guardsmen – one a high-ranking Command Sergeant Major – were involved in the alleged theft.

What did they steal? It’s unclear at this point, although our sources have confirmed no “weaponry” was taken. We’re told some of the stolen items were later sold at pawn shops in the Upstate and at the Anderson, S.C. “Jockey Lot” – a local farmer’s market.

UPDATE: Sources close to the S.C. National Guard have confirmed an ongoing investigation into a theft at the Williamston, S.C. Armory, however we are waiting on an official comment.

They pawned the stuff to buy oxygen and walkers for the “troops”. All these guys are over the hill and overweight. Why the Adjutant General tolerates these guys is beyond me. It must be politics or Eckstrom has some dirt on him. It makes you question the judgement of the Adjutant General for appointing Eckstrom to “command” this bunch of “good ole boys”. They make those of us in the National Guard look bad. Disband them immediately. They serve no purpose.

That Livingston would even think of appointing Eckstrom shows the utter bankruptcy and incompetency of Republicans in this state.

The SC State Guard has given the greatstate of SC enough headaches. Look at them walking around wearing an ACU uniform with black name tapes. The overweight problem is because all they do is ride around in their Flintstones mobile better know as a golf cart. If you want to look the part get off your lazy asses and try walking and running! Oh, I’m sorry they don’t supply oxygen for their traffic cops. It would be a cold day in hell before I would let
the SC State Guard do anything for my organization. Hooah to the NG for kicking these losers out!

The S.C. State Guard is under the command of the State’s Adjutant General – Eckstrom was selected by the Adjutant General for his post.

I saw these guys in action at Freedom Weekend Aloft and thought they might be part of a reenactment group and not an actuall military organization. To be in public with one SGT using a walker and oxygen, and the oldest CPL I have ever seen, I mean this guy had to be pushing 70, I thought was very disrespectful to the uniform of our military. I know times are hard, but I am sure Wal*Mart is hiring greaters or Hardee’s needs some coffee refill guys for the morning rush that they can volunteer for if they can’t go back. The GOV needs to step in and put an end to this sorry excuse of an organization! They are out of shape, lazy, and not squared away. I have seen Cub Scout Troops that are more squared away and better organized.

The State Guard had so much potential, but a severe lack of training, funding, leadership, standards, and morale has made the organization a joke. There are many members of the SCSG who wanted to be in the active military/ national guard/ reserves, but couldn’t due to minor health reasons, employment, or family reasons. SCSG was promoted as a way to serve the state during emergencies, but this simply never happened.

The State Guard was created in order for the Governor to have a state defense course if the entire S.C. National Guard was mobilized in order to fight the Ruskies. In case no one noticed, the cold war is over. This is a great example of how a government entity lives on long after the need for it is gone. The State Guard now exists so that a bunch of old guys can pretend to be Colonels or Generals. I think they have a general officer for every 100 soldiers. This isn’t free to the taxpayers. These guys get a tax deduction for mileage and days allegedly on duty

There are quite a few of members who are combat vets in the guard. There are also a lot of Guardsmen who are dedicated qualified men / women with no prior military service because of minor health problems. there are also a lot of fat lazy slobs giving us a bad rep that we do not deserve. Most people will see the rotten apple but not notice the good apples. People will also judge a man or group by the one or two bad things they see and ignore the hundreds of good things.

Former Guardsman and proud of the unit I served with.
