In news that’s likely to cause more than a few conniption fits among the S.C. General Assembly’s social conservative (a.k.a. Bible-thumping) contingent, the University of South Carolina has a new job opening for a LGBT program coordinator.

Wait … what’s that?

Glad you asked …

Job Title: Student Services Program Coordinator II – Coordinator for LGBT Programs

Internal Title: Coordinator for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Programs
Band 5
Requisition Number 005453
Minimum Salary $32,741

Job Description The Coordinator for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Programs coordinates programs and services for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) students and educates the University community on LGBT matters. The position will serve as an office liaison / advisor for LGBT student organizations. As a member of the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs team, this person will also provide support and guidance on effective methods for retaining and providing cultural support to underrepresented students on campus.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
– Coordinating LGBT workshops, programs and services and maintaining drop-in assistance for students

– Coordinating educational and awareness-raising programs from design to implementation for the campus community and assist in activities of the department.

– Coordinating the Safe Zone training program for students and staff including recruitment, training and oversight of program volunteers and assessment of program effectiveness.

– Creating and implementing a variety of training sessions, facilitating panel discussion groups (as is necessary), coordinating co-sponsored programming with student organizations, academic departments and other campus units.

– Maintaining a continual awareness of LGBT climate concerns as it pertains to the work of LGBT issues and University policy development.

– Engaging in outreach efforts with other constituent groups that bridge multiple identities and engaging in advising, and encouraging/supporting students on issues related to identity development.

– Providing leadership training and development for designated students and student organizations.
Minimum Qualifications Master’s degree in Student Personnel Services or a related field and 1 year related experience, or a bachelor’s degree and 3 years related experience.

Must have demonstrated knowledge and understanding of LGBT issues and needs along with the intersections of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, gender identities and expressions of other areas of diversity as experienced in an institution of higher education.

Hmmmm …

As this website has stated on numerous occasions we unambiguously support gay rights. We also unilaterally reject discrimination on the ground of sexual orientation. Meanwhile as for marriage – we don’t think government should have anything to do with it (sanctioning or banning).

But positions like these are simply ridiculous … and have no place in any government entity.

Unless of course they’re prepared to create a position overseeing programs for straight white men.

In fact superfluous politically correct jobs like this one are the latest in a long line of reasons why we believe our state’s institutions of higher learning should be set free to pursue their destiny as private colleges and universities.

Care to mention how lot’s of other flagship universities hire for this position? Or how at 11% of total funding coming from the state government USC hardly qualifies as a “government organization” or even how USC has positions for coordinators for “minority student affairs” as well as other “ridiculous” positions that offer services for underrepresented minorities in the student population? Or does that not fit the “Unfair. Imbalanced.” agenda?

No, all of the university employees are state employees. That’s a whole lot of health insurance and retirement funds and administration costs. You can’t look at just the appropriated funds. USC is not prepared to offer their own plans at the rate they pick up the tab now. Obamacare may change that. It is already hammering adjuncts with the 29 hour rule.

I have a ridical concept. All students are students. Period. Not African-American, not gay, hetero or anything. Just students that are admitted simply based on being accademically qualified and are allowed to stay until graduation by successfully completing the required course work. Nothing more. Nothing Less. No affirmative action. No discrimination based on sex, race, age, religion, or sexual preference.

Works for me……..

When I attended college it was for the technical training and how to get the best paying job AFTER I graduated.

Since I was a veteran on the GI Bill the colleges I attended was for the course load, degree and employment potential and not the football team’s win/loss record.

Non-issue as far as I was concerned.

I might have attended 2 football games in 2 years tops.

As long as ‘gays’ remain second-class citizens, there’s need for these programs. You can’t support gay rights without supporting gay marriage/civil unions, etc. That’s fundamental.

There’s already a program for straight white men. It’s called, ‘we own the world’.

It is my understanding that the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Programs has already acquired an on campus moniker.

Unofficially the students refer to it as The Suck, Bang, Blow Department.

If I’m trying to make LGBT more palatable to the general population and I’m in charge of marketing, I probably run a derivation of said label you noted and tie it in with Tequila: “lick it, slam it, suck it” I believe is the appropriate order.

Straight college kids+tequila parties+mindless chants= acceptance for LGBT’s(for the duration of the party at least).

They should just transfer Ryan Williams from the Greek Life department. He takes out his cock envy on all the fraternities. Seems pretty normal that a gay dude is in charge of all the fraternity houses. Probably peeks in the showers. Would it make sense for a dude to be in charge of all the sorority houses?

It’s nice in theory to say that all students should be students without any special attention or accommodations, but it simply doesn’t work in practice. USC has demonstrated that it wants diversity. In order to encourage diverse applicants to attend, stay at, and graduate from USC, the school has to make sure that said students are not facing obstacles preventing them from successfully completing their studies.

The university is simply too large to identify discrimination, whether based on race, religion, sexual orientation, or other characteristics, without people specifically looking for it. Outside groups can only do so much and they do not have the power to enact change in the system. While a LGBT coordinator may seem like useless overhead, it affects the number of applicants, admission yields, retention rates, graduation rates, faculty recruitment and satisfaction, and the image of the school inside and outside the state. While gays certainly are not a large enough demographic to cause huge changes in those metrics, they certainly impact them in the same way that African-Americans, Latinos, Muslims, Sikhs, and women do.
