Dreher High School has fired Kinsley Wentzky, the 34-year-old teacher accused of having sex with two of her teenaged students.
Well … the Columbia, S.C.-based government-run school has opted against renewing Wentzky’s contract in light of the S.C. Department of Education (SCDOE)’s suspension of her teaching certificate. So she technically wasn’t fired, but …
Anyway, this is as it should be … school and state officials exercised responsible judgment in getting Wentzky out of the classroom.
And this is where the story should stop …
Is it stopping, though?
Of course not. Taxpayers are set to subsidize a protracted court battle against Wentzky – and will likely be picking up the tab to incarcerate her for an undetermined period of time at the conclusion of that trial. How come? Because in South Carolina, Bible-thumping state lawmakers have chosen to criminalize certain sexual encounters among consenting adults.
Seriously, both of Wentzky’s alleged “victims” were above the age of consent in South Carolina – a.k.a. 16 years old. In other words like Wentzky they ought to have the right to engage in sexual relations with whomever they choose – free from any criminal consequences.
If these boys weren’t of consenting age it would be a different story … but they were. Which means these affairs should not be considered criminal acts. Irresponsible? Yes. But criminal? Absolutely not.
Wentzky has paid for her indiscretions with her job. And while we won’t speculate as to what this scandal has done to her family, it couldn’t have been pretty. As far as we’re concerned, Wentzky has paid – and will continue to pay – the price for her actions professionally and personally.
Accordingly, dragging her through a public spectacle (and likely sending her to jail) serves no purpose whatsoever – while needlessly consuming public resources.
In addressing this issue recently, we conducted a poll of our readers. More than 1,300 of you responded, with 58 percent saying Wentzky’s conduct was “wrong, but not criminal,” 36 percent saying it was “both wrong and criminal” and six percent saying it was “not wrong.”

Back in our day, when we had sex with our teachers, we kept our mouths shut. We didn’t see news stories like this. Loose lips sink ships. These kids today aren’t ashamed to snitch.

There are two errors in that calculation.
The really asinine part of the law is that if these two “boys” had not been students at her school, she would not be charged.
Just a dumbass law.
I believe the story would be pitched entirely differently if a 34 yr old dirty old MAN teacher had pounded a couple of fresh young teenage girls 16 and 17 years old.
It is amazing that the majority of the folks on here voted that a teacher having sex with their students was wrong but not criminal. How would they have felt if it was their daughters or the sister/brother’s daughters getting pounded by a male teacher – THEY WOULD HAVE CALLED IT RAPE.
But guess what? If that 34-year old “dirty old man” was just the “cool guy” down the street who keeps weed and booze, then he has broken no law by sexing the 16 and 17 year old girls.
16 & 17 year old girls are already actively engaged in sex; in most if not many cases with multiple partners. They look far from that young age in both manner and dress. Now some little hottie comes on to a 30 35 year old man; go for it buddy; go for it!
I doubt “they would have called it rape”; I am sure those teachers would have been called willing and eager partners; and if the teachers are willing and able, then the teachers cannot call it rape.

It may not be statutory rape but it does violate SC State Law prohibiting sex between a teacher and a student who is under 18.
Regardless of the age or genders involved, sexual relationships between students and teachers generally is and always should be a firing offense. This type of relationship indicates a lack of common sense and self control.

The only time a teacher should face jail time for consensual sex with a student above the age of consent is if undue influence was actually applied. If the teacher says, “sex or an F,” then that’s extortion and it should be a crime.
But if it’s just two people who happen to have a consensual (if inappropriate) attraction, then the teacher should be fired, publicly outted (if appropriate), and permanently lose his or her credentials. And that should be the end of it.
Wentzky is being publicly shamed by these events, and that’s fine because she knew the consequences. What she did was wrong, but it was not a criminal wrong, IMO. Prosecuting her and throwing her in prison is unnecessary salt in the wound, and her children will suffer more than anyone else by the lose of their mommy.
So will she be tutoring the slower students outside of the “education” system now?

I really have mixed feelings about this . It seems to be happening more than it has in the past. Apparently she was the instigator and from what I read this may not be the first time. Jail time will not serve a useful purpose in her rehabilation if that is even possible, but it may cause others to rethink their actions. I don’t think I could be convinced that she should ever get custody of her children. As a retired educator, I know that every teacher in S.C. is made aware of the laws regarding sex with students. She knew the consequences when she engaged in the activity. I will be satisfied with the courts decision.

Laws are written to protect not prosecute so maybe you might want to revisit Government 101 from 9th grade. There should be no trepidation about bringing the law to bear in this case….if it will help make some other teacher think twice it is worth it’s weight in gold.

Teachers are by the way a custodians of the public trust I am expected BY LAW to provide an atmosphere in class that is safe and conducive to learning. That was the first thing that was made clear to me as a teacher. A safe environment is not something parents hope for it is something they demand. As the mother of a 16 year old boy, I would put her UNDER the jail. All you macho men may think this is so cool for a teenage boy to bang his teacher. But this type of sexual relationship is the most unhealthy. A teacher is charged with not only educating our children but protecting them from this sort of thing.
