CHRYSLER WILL BUILD JEEPS IN CHINA
Something Mitt Romney said wound up being true?
Color us shocked …
The notoriously truth-averse former “Republican” presidential nominee ran an advertisement during the 2012 campaign claiming that Chrysler – which received more than $12 billion in the federal government’s 2008 automotive bailout – was planning to move Jeep production to China. The company bristled at the allegation, claiming it had no such plans.
This week, however, Chrysler and its parent company Fiat announced a deal with Guangzhou Automobile Group to build Jeeps in China – vehicles which will be sold to Chinese consumers. Chrysler has expanded production and added jobs in America in recent years, to be sure, but at the end of the day this announcement means American jobs will be headed overseas.
So Romney (sort of) got it right …
Chrysler sold 701,626 Jeeps in 2012 – a 19 percent increase over the previous year. It also sold twice as many Jeeps in China.
The federal government sold its shares in Chrysler in 2011 – at a $1.3 billion loss to taxpayers. Also, important questions remain as to whether the company would have fared better had it engaged in a traditional bankruptcy – not one in which the government bailed out union pension funds as opposed to satisfying legitimate creditors.
According to a report released last October, Chrysler’s post-bailout sales were 20 percent lower than they would have been had the company not utilized government aid.

….. “jeep” in Chinese is pronounced “gyp”
Purchasing an automobile from an auto company HQd in Detroit is a de-facto contribution to the DNC.
My Mercedes was made in Alabama is far superior to any of the crap schlepped out of GM/Ford/Chrysler.
YES WE CAN!!
Concur, my Subaru made in Indiana, the AWD system is better than any of the big 3s systems.
ditto for my Honda made in Ohio
You’re somewhat misleading there Colonel.
That Subaru was ASSEMBLED in Indiana not MADE there. (We’ve had two ourselves and they were good cars (Forrester & an Outback).
Mrs. “SparkleCity was in the mood for a new one to replace the Outback (160,000 miles on it & the AC crapped out at end of summer). We looked at the new ones and were disappointed in the controls and the emphasis in the owner’s manual to use synthetic oil during warranty (that shit is ~$5.00+ a quart & I have changed the oil myself since the Outback was new; the salesman told me I was the first guy he had ever seen look UNDER the car and check the owner’s manual for specs).
We looked at Jeeps and she liked the Liberty and it drove much better. That is what she has now and she loves it. Much better price than the Subaru too. The thing has a lot more acceleration and handles better. It has a version of AWD with selectable 4WD. Controls are less complicated too which was a selling point.
That Honda was not BUILT in Ohio, it was assembled in Ohio.
Just like the Beemers here in Spartanburg County(NOT Greenville County). They are ASSEMBLED here. The parts come from Germany and other countries including some here in Spartanburg County
Our Outback turned into a moneypit around 100K miles. And I took damn good care of it(I had a thorough maintenance log to prove it)
Except for Yugo’s,(my old engineering office was on the Yugo test drive route off Lauren’s Rd and we used to chuckle seeing the damn things break down on test drives!!) ratings are like assholes, they’re everywhere.
No Romney did not sort of get it right. At the time of his ad, Chrysler said it was negotiating for plants in China, and that those plants would produce cars to sell in China. Romney said Chrysler was going to shut down American plants and move those jobs to China. That was a total fabrication, and he knew it.
Success of the company in China will mean more jobs in the US, not fewer. For example financing will still be in the US.
If the American government would do what the Chinese government does to protect its Citizens, foreign companies would be building plants here to sell goods here. But Free Trade folks would never allow that. No Romney did not sort of get it right. First we’ll gather all the facts and then we’ll formulate the plan…
Your Idiot won Jan…Why are you prostituting yourself still??..he gets 4 more years to F*^@ up…
You look ignorant ‘splainin’ your stupidity…….
No, BigT. Jan was ‘splainin’ Romney’s stupidity and the stupidity of anyone — like, maybe, you? — that swallowed that crap about Chrysler moving US Jeep production to China.
I look forward every day to the fresh ideas of big idio”T”.
It is always a pleasure to read the profanity laced tirade of the self professed “professional journalist’.
I would submit that the best features of big idio”T” ran in two distinct directions.
Down his daddy’s leg, and down the crack of his mama’s ass!
YOU BETCHA!
YOU BETCHA!
All I could think of as I read this one was:
a – I’m not at all suprised
b – Jeeps are crap anyway
c – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rY0WxgSXdEE
Hmmm. I seem to remember the Jeep Liberty being the lowest rated car in some list or other.
Sorry I don’t know how i copied the pargraph twice, but you get the point.
“I saw a story today, that one of the great manufacturers in this state, Jeep, now owned by the Italians, is thinking of moving all production to China,” he said, to boos from the audience. “I will fight for every good job in America. I’m going to fight to make sure trade is fair, and if it’s fair, America will win.”

come on FITS, don’t just make shit up like others do…..this news is nothing new. Always been the plan by Fiat. Does not take one job away from American plants.
Chinese cars are tin cans on wheels, there’s practically no regulations for safety or environmental features. They crumple like empty beer cans when hit. YouTube will show you at a mere 40 MPH a typical car they drive in China obliterates itself hitting a brick wall, the entire drivers seat being included in the “crumple zone” of the car.
Why on earth would Chrysler build cars like that in America and then ship them all the way over to China? If you’re making cars that dirt cheap, it makes no sense to haul them overseas.
Don’t get me wrong, I wish these car companies would expand in the USA when they wanted to make more cars for the American market, but why grief them over making Chinese cars in China? If they want cheap death traps, let them build ’em themselves.
Sure Robert, sure
Capital seeks its most efficient use. Imagine that. Chinese Commies can build cars cheaper than Americans.
My
Hope and change!
Wow!!!!! Obama is caught in ANOTHER lie and Romney is RIGHT!!!!….
And FITS is suprised….Imagine that…
Wrong, Romney was caught in a lie, one of many.
A liar and a cocksucker…. yes you are.
Jeep was one the first USA makers to build cars in China and they closed down several years ago under various owners. No doubt this will be a retooled different vehicle with an el cheapo FIAT content.
To think that Jeep production in China will somehow “mean more jobs in the US” and “will allow the company to more competitively price its US production in the US market” shows an incredibly libtarded view of China and its manufacturing practices.
This simply ensure millions of Jeeps will be manufactured in China rather than Detroit.
Making it much easier for the Chinese to steal and reverse engineer decades of automotive technology.
Kudos to the Chinese since the UAW’s “skilled” labor/thuggery won’t be used in China.
YES WE CAN!!
So now not only can we not enact laws to keep American jobs from going to China, we cannot even try to compete in China. What do you right wing nuts want? Just give up and give the Chinese all manufacturing or agree that we all need to live like the Chinese.
Same reasoning behind Keystone XL and the oil industry in general. Bend over backwards to make oil companies profit by letting them send their product overseas to more profitable markets. But hey, it’ll make gas prices go down here! lol… Not.
Chrysler is one of many, many car companies expanding in China and making cars there.
Of the automobiles produced, 44.3% were local brands (including BYD, Lifan, Chang’an (Chana), Geely, Chery, Hafei, Jianghuai (JAC), Great Wall and Roewe), and the rest were produced by joint ventures with foreign car makers such as Volkswagen, General Motors, Hyundai, Nissan, Honda, Toyota, Mitsubishi etc.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automotive_industry_in_the_People%27s_Republic_of_China
The Chinese already steal shit from America when it comes to cars, but it is predominantly limited to stealing car designs, which doesn’t require the car to be made in the country for them to be able to lift. The Chinese government doesn’t give two shits when that happens, either.
As far as automotive technology, not sure what they could steal. Chinese make and buy cheap cars. I doubt any of the outside car companies would ever put any serious technology behind the cars they build there unless it were cost-effective. They should know anything they build there could “find its way” to China’s domestic companies, so that’s their risk to worry about.
And yes, no unions to worry about. Thank goodness they can expect their employees to live in squalor with little complaints!
FITS told us there was NO difference in Romney and Obama…
Looks like Obama is: A LIAR…
And Romney is: RIGHT ON….
Just like Obama lied about: Benghazi, raising taxes and the 47%…
Wonder if any Obama idiots, who took FITS’ and the media’s word,…Feel STUPID now????
Got to be a few…not er’body wants to be a Dumb@$$…do yall???
“I will not raise taxes on the middle class”
Obama is off to an even faster start breaking his campaign promises since he broke that one even BEFORE he had the opportunity to blow another innaugeration!
BWAAA HAAA HAAA
I loved the looks on all the good little libtard faces when they opened their paychecks these past two weeks to find HIGHER taxes!
YES WE CAN!
Take the middle class tax increase up with the House Republicans. It was their tax.
YES THEY DID
“It’s a holiday,” Ryan said Wednesday of the payroll tax cut. “Holidays come, holidays go. It was never intended to be permanent tax policy.”
washingtonpost.com/blogs/2chambers/post/paul-ryan-on-payroll-tax-holiday-holidays-come-holidays-go/2011/12/07/gIQAXj5qcO_blog.html#pagebreak
Obama breaks his promise and Jan blames only the republicans?
Do tell Jan, what was the bill that passed the democrat Senate that contained a payroll tax cut extension?
Words cannot express how disappointed this makes me. Ive driven the same wrangler since highschool, i love that thing, ive never wanted any other kind of car. rumors were floating around not too long ago that jeep was going to seperate itself away from CPD and be an independant company again. my jeep is starting to go, and i have been in the market for a new one. I never wanted anything other than a jeep, this is going to make me reconsider.
You are upset that Chrysler is trying to sell cars to Chinese people? Are you against US firms making profits? Would you rather they keep buying Japanese cars?
This is not about a US company moving jobs overseas. It’s about a US company’s expansion. China doesn’t really make cars for itself. They’ve been moving away from Japanese cars recently because of tensions with Japan. So it’s a good opportunity for someone to move in.
im against an american icon being made in china, im against an american icon being owned by a german company
meanwhile BMRs keep rollin oughta Greer SC
BMRs?
check oughta should be outa
Sic, you’re slippin my man. You wrote a total bullshit story and failed to mention the Ex-Im Bank, gubmint schools, taxpayer heroes, or your main shawty Mickey Mulvaney.
Take it from someone who knows a little about the car business:
All the car manufacturers have become nothing more than designers/assemblers.
They ALL source parts from who ever makes them to their standards(low or high) for the best price.
The dirty little secret is that BMW’s, Gov’t Motors, & Honda make cars with mostly the same pool of 2nd and 3rd tier suppliers(just with different specs).
The all relatively speaking have a similar number of Chinese, American, German, and various other countries parts in them.
Whether anyone likes it or not it’s a global industry with the variations surrounding design and assembly points.
Yep, you’re right about that.
Only two vehicles I know of that are largely MADE in the US are Corvettes & Harley-Davidson’s and Harley has a number of foreign parts I think but probably most USA manufactured. The carb/fuel injector (and maybe brakes) come to mind as being of foreign origin.
I still buy/own rice-burners though….. A lot more “bang for the buck”
I sure wish I could afford to own a “Vette” though……
The “Vette” is the only 4 wheeled vehicle that turns my head every time I see one….
That and a beautifully restored 1974 black & gold Norton Commando……………(which sure as hell AIN”T a 4 wheeled vehicle)
That Commando = classic beautiful lines; kinda like a 1977 Monte Carlo (again gloss black with just a “hint” of red pinstripe along the sides) or maybe a 1964 Impalla SS
Beautiful classic vehicles all (IMHO)
It’s freaky you picked out the 77′ Monetcarlo, my grandmother had one she used to hot rod around with me in it as a kid.
If you want to SELL globally you must BUILD globally.
End of story.
Romney did NOT get it right – not even sort of.
FITS do you actually think that you have any credibility after the zillions (give or take one or two)of breaking news stories that have appeared on this site heralding the imminent indictment of Governor Haley?
