THE SECRET TO JAMES FRANKLIN’S SUCCESS?
When the University of South Carolina escaped Nashville, Tennessee last August with a 17-13 season opening win over the Vanderbilt Commodores, we were pretty sure the Gamecocks promising 2012 season was kaput.
No way Vandy was “that good.”
As it turns out, though, Vanderbilt was (is) a pretty good football team. The Commodores won five games in the Southeastern Conference for the first time since 1935 and defeated N.C. State in the Music City Bowl to finish the season with a 9-4 record – earning the team’s first postseason ranking since 1948.
Not too shabby …
The secret to the Commodores success? Head coach James Franklin – who in addition to being a master motivator has business cards with detachable “throwing stars” on them (according to SB Nation).
Wait … what???
“Miyagi say: You go to Vandy.”
Yeah … talk about a “pointed” recruiting appeal. Hard to say know to a coach who is armed with a pocket full of throwing stars.

I don’t know nothin’ about throwing stars – but the one in the picture (and the one on the source website) sure doesn’t look detachable. Maybe with some tin snips…
…. agree – but who do you thrown them at? Could they be classified as a lethal weapon?
I have two cousins who won scholarships to Vanderbilt and both made excellent use of their education.
Stupid FITS, I KNEW Vandy was a decent team early on…and I knew they would be no Push-Over for SC on the road w/ 8 months to prepare…
Franklin proved formidable the year before…
It’s Dumb@$$ losers like FITS who thought the season was ‘Kaput’ after the Gamecocks’ close win at Vandy…
You were P!$$!ing yourself after Clemnson beat a very poor Auburn team…and you think Clemnson is NC calibler because Dabo tells you they are…
You are VERY much like the Pack-Think, Teddy-Heffner and K-Mac-level of media of Columbia…
you are mired in Bass-Ackwards thinking…and you’re too stupid to gage a trend even after I spell it out for you….
Must be a slow night at the “Founding Editor’s house.”
Would have given my left nut for one of my children to attend Vandy, even my namesake, Jimmy, the entomologist. Don’t give tinker’s damn for their uncredible football program.
Vandy over NC State. NC State hasn’t had a credible football program since Earl Edwards’ 1967 team played in white shoes. My Tigers, playing in painted orange shoes, laid waste to that shoemanship at Death Valley.
Final: Clemson 14, NC State 6.
