The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution provides American citizens with an unqualified, unambiguous right to keep and bear arms – one that the federal government (or any government, for that matter) is explicitly enjoined from infringing upon.

“The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed,” it says.

If you don’t believe us, pay a visit to the National Archives in Washington, D.C. – where the U.S. Bill of Rights is on public display. In fact we should all pay a visit to our nation’s capital sooner rather than later – preferably as part of a “Million Gun March.”

Anyway, the beauty of the Second Amendment is the simple solution it provides those struggling with the “War on Guns” currently being waged by the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama. What “simple solution” are we referring to? Civil disobedience.

That’s right: To rid ourselves of the onus of Obama’s assault on the Second Amendment, every American should refuse to follow any legislation or “executive action” that violates this most sacred of all constitutionally guaranteed liberties. 

Beyond that? If the Obama administration wants our guns, it can “take them.” Or try to. Because last time we checked, it lacks both the manpower (and the cajones) to pull off such a feat.

Exactly. Nullification allows the citizenry to put a middle finger in the air to those who attempt to enact laws that usurp our God given natural right to self defense. The impossibility of enforcement also favors using this method of protest.

Hi Smirks! I often agree with you but not on this one. They are going to push and push hard for anything they can get. They are going to push for another Clinton magazine and weapon ban, but much worse than the previous one. When those measures, quite predictably, do not work, they will want more, as they always do. This is not something to take lightly and I hope the Molon Labe mindset will prevail. We will need it one day.

It is extremely unlikely that even the Clinton-era bans will pass through a Republican-held House or get enough of a majority to get around a filibuster in the Senate. Trying an even stronger ban won’t stand a snowball’s chance in hell. I’ll save my bravado for when there’s an actual threat of government taking my weapons.

All of this is pure fantasizing and tough guy crap. I honestly liken it to young kids listening to gangsta rap pretending that they too are hardened thugs. Gun owners should hope to never have to use their guns in self defense, not openly welcome it and compare themselves to “THIS IS SPARTA!” for beckoning a violent and fatal confrontation with armed law enforcement that is in no way, shape, or form being considered whatsoever.

If and when government tries to strip me of my rights, I will do what is necessary to defend myself and others, but “Molon Labe” or “It’ll be 1776 all over again” only paints those who believe in gun rights as whacko clowns and does nothing but further gun control arguments. “Molon Labe” might as well be “Moron Lube” because all saying shit like that hurts more than it helps.

Now would you like to ask the tyrannical government question again? You must understand who was writing and the circumstances they were writing in to understand the intent of their writing.

Why would we (Americans) expect “rights” to be addressed and grievances to be redressed? Perhaps it dates back to the 1689 English Bill of Rights:
– the right of petition,
– an independent judiciary (the Sovereign was forbidden to establish his own courts or to act as a judge himself),
– freedom from taxation by royal (executive) prerogative, without agreement by Parliament (legislators),
– freedom from a peace-time standing army,
– freedom [for Protestants] to bear arms for their defense, as allowed by law,
-freedom to elect members of Parliament without interference from the Sovereign,
– freedom of speech in Parliament,
– freedom from cruel and unusual punishments and excessive bail, and
– freedom from fines and forfeitures without trial.

The Second Amendment is two statements outlining six purposes (according to the men who wrote it):

– To enable the people to organize a militia
– To aid repelling invasion;
– To aid in the suppression of insurrection
– To facilitate the natural right of self-defense
– To enable the people to participate in the enforcement of law;
– To deter tyrannical government;

At the time the Constitution was written the US could not afford a large standing Army – a well-regulated militia consisted of all able bodied men from 17-45. The first statement is a personal “responsibility” They were expected to participate in drill and be ready to defend their homes and country when called. The right to keep and bear arms was not necessary in order to have a militia – in fact if you’ve been to Colonial Williamsburg, you have seen “The Magazine” where weapons were held to be used in times of need. USC’s library sits on an old drill field.

The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed second part of the statement – and is a “personal right”. The need to defend oneself, deal with insurrection and aid in law enforcement was critical because there was no “PoPo wid a radio” to come to your aid. Many have tried to make the case that we don’t have a need to “defend ourselves” with the prevalence of police today – I’d suggest they look at one of the most policed cities in the country, Chicago, to see how that’s working out. The ability to deal with tyranny in the form of a local government or the national government was just as important. England controlled the access to arms through a variety of means and tyrannical local governments abounded (see Ireland, Scotland…)

The reality is that 95% of the time when the the PoPo finally show up they are they to make reports, direct traffic, take evidence, etc.

The time required to commit most crimes is WAY under the average response time for police.

One of the statements made at the end of the “911 Commission Report” was that the first responders to/at an incident are the victims/folks on the scene, and that they must deal with it until assistance arrives. I don’t remember the exact statement but this is the gist of it.

We (early Americans) had already been granted the rights we now hold dear in the Bill of Rights only to have them usurped by the King.

That’s the “tyranny” portion referred to by Colonel in his original statement in which he listed the intentions of the founders on the 2nd.

And the $hit about the king is BS, too. The Constitution was written to ensure that the government was not tyrannical. The power was given to the people through representation. So to compare the relationship that we as a colony had to Great Britain to the relationship we have as citizens with our own government is to compare two different things. You don’t like the actions of the government? Then elect a different government next time around. You don’t bring out the guns if you don’t like how the last election went.

Yea, I’m not sure a significant portion of the population feel that it’s worked….I think we can all agree that parts of the Constitution are regularly ignored.

Yea, but that’s not what Jefferson said above…in fact he suggested it might be necessary over and over.

I think you and I might agree here Ken. My opinion is the Constitution was one giant compromise between very different philosophies. When you look at re-writes, state constitutions(written by some of the founders), etc. you can see this played out in specific parts of the language with arguments over verbiage, etc.

The big gulf was between Jefferson and Madison who had distinctly different approaches to gov’t theory and tried to meld them.

I personally think the 2nd was written purposely vague and try to placate both people…I can in no way ever imagine Madison suggesting perpertual revolution….like Jefferson.

In that regard, I think the 2nd was written specifically FOR(in favor of) the gov’t, whether tyrannical or not. I think Jefferson & Madison had different opinions of what the 2nd meant.

Once again Ken, you must take context into account when you read a primary document. The concept of individual rights was so much the norm that most representatives at the convention didn’t consider the bill of rights necessary. There was no real gun law in the US until the late 20s early thirties and that came about as a result of the criminal excesses primarily related to Prohibition.

One of the enumerated rights from English law of the 1600s was the (plain old) right to keep and bear arms.

Aside from the fact we all come here regularly to see what new atrocity the act of voting has ultimately thrust upon us…suggesting that voting isn’t working, we have to make note that people aren’t upset over the last election and talking about gov’t overthrow or whatever-they are upset because what they consider a fundamental right is being taken away from them(self defense), even if it’s just incremental(like automatic fire weapons with large magazines)-whether you agree or not.

BUT:

1. Warsaw Uprising – 1943
2. Hungarian Revolt – 1956

Tragic events both

Warsaw Uprising: Small arms against Nazi tanks and other armored vehicles is not a good idea no matter how evil your oppressors are and how dedicated and desperate the opposition is.

Hungarian Uprising: See above but even more details. The Hungarians had the support of the general population and even formed those MILITIAS some of you have such a hard-on for.

Guess what? The Soviets decided enough was enough and totally kicked the Hungarians asses while the United States and other western nations stood by and did not intervene. I have seen the newsreels and heard the tapes of the resistance fighters pleading for help who even gave coordinates for drop zones. Sadly, to no avail.

The Soviets totally laid waste to the population and purged all history of the uprising. It took 30 years for the Uprising to be recognized (basically after the Soviet Union fell)

Lesson learned:

Small arms against a well trained military force with state of the art weapons is a futile effort if the force is determined to quell the uprising even if you did form one of your precious militias.

You can talk all the smack you want about defending your rights and fondle your precious Glock all night long but if push comes to shove and some of you hot heads keep believing some of this semi-sedition bullshit, you are liable to realize what a big mistake you are making.

As I am writing this Al-Queida (sp) has taken American and other westerns hostage. I pray for their safe release/rescue. Don’t you know our adversaries are watching this bullshit over guns closely? You can have all the guns you can carry on you but one dirty bomb,EMP or biological attack negates every fucking gun you’ve got.

I just got back from a great night of wings & beer and seeing “Zero Dark-Thirty” with some of my retired military buds. There is a fair chance we hauled some of those Seals around when we were over there. It is a damn good movie and everyone should go see it to remind you who the REAL enemy is. We were all in agreement that some of this shit has gone too far. One of my buds told me that some dipshit hoarders had camped out all night long at Academy Sports on Woodruff Road just so they could buy up every fucking bullet when the doors opened at 0800 hrs. He reminded me that I had told him this was BS but when he saw it for himself when he went to Academy the following afternoon and the shelves were stripped bare, he admitted I was right about the stupidity of hoarding.

I can understand some of y’all concerns but seriously, some of this shit is getting out of hand.

Actually Sparkle, an EMP could be the great equalizer. My electronics won’t work but my M1911A1, M1903A6 and the rest will function just fine. There is substantial evidence that EMPs are not as controllable as originally billed and that they will likely affect larger areas than originally thought.

Most scenarios involving EMPs are a China or Russia against the US – the Chinese think they can destroy the entire American electronic infrastructure, protected or not. In that scenario, you’d need your weapons just to eat and protect yourself from city rats looking for food, water, shelter or a place to plug their non-functioning IPod in.

Chemicals just suck all the way around but they are generally survivable if prepared except for the most persistent varieties. Should you survive, the same truism that you need weapons to protect yourself applies.

The “Bushmaster” of 1775 was the “Brown Bess” or British Land Pattern Musket. All members of the American Militia (all males age 17-46) were required to own a firearm and ammunition and most wanted a Brown Bess.

Compared to the conventional “hunting rifle” of the day the Brown Bess was an assault rifle. It had a slightly oversized smooth bore to make it fast to load and to reduce the effects of fouling during prolonged firing. It came equipped with a bayonet. It had a sustained rate of fire of 3-4 rounds a minute compared to a rifled “hunting” rifle’s rate of 1-2 rounds per minute. The soldier carried a cartridge pouch that held 20-40 pre constructed rounds consisting of a charge, wadding and a bullet – kind of like a magazine. Hunters had a “possibles” bag with wad, shot or bullets and a powder horn. He seldom carried more ammunition than necessary to bring home dinner.

Please explain your position. First of all, I was responding to a rather juvenile post, so I figured I’d use an argument the poster would understand. Seems he/she did, as there was no response. You, on the other hand, either can’t admit you understand the point, or are really so dense that you don’t get it.

So, here’s the point. The original comment implied (although wrong) that the Founders could not comprehend the technology that exists today that makes the 2A what it is. I responded by offering that they could not comprehend the technology that exists today that makes the free speech aspect of the 1A what it is. I threw in a joke about Mormons, but you seem equally devoid of humor as you are of intellect and honesty.

So, you may not like my point, but unless you are either stupid or completely dishonest, it is a valid point. If you feel it is not, try to explain why, without using words you clearly don’t understand.

No but the militia was expected to arm itself with a military grade weapon, axe, bayonet, powder and shot. The bushmaster of the day. Military weapons were in the .60-.70 caliber range (the “Brown Bess was a .71 caliber). They were always smoothbore to facilitate quick loading and were also generally larger in bore than the ball used with them, again to facilitate quick loading.

Rifled “squirrel guns ” that were highly accurate but slow to load existed – the second amendment didn’t preclude one over the other but the right extends to military grade weapons by intent.

If our gov’t(the only gov’t which has actually used nukes on what was a predominately civilian population) has nukes, poisen gas, napalm, circling airbone machine gun platforms, and various other methods of horrific killing devices- Does it not stand to reason that if you interpet the 2nd to be the ultimate safe guard against gov’t tyranny on its people that the populace as a whole should be able to have the same weapons?

I think that’s an interesting point to contemplate.

Sure, it’s going to drive people crazy…and one day some psycho with a tank might manage to kill a hundred people…but it is what it is.

Colonel, I fired a few 762mm surface to surface missiles in my time, but only with practice flash/smoke warheads. The real ammo was kept in bunkers in a secured compound.

My best shot was 55 meter CEP at 12,000 meter range. Not bad with only 15 feet of rail guidance, eh?

Too bad they did not offer an “Expert” bar for Honest John to hang below the ones I earned for M-14 and M-1911-A1.

I’ve read “One Second After” my self and the book that inspired it “Alas Babylon” when I was about 15 years old. I’m a “Boomer” who remembers all too well the “duck & cover” drills and as I have posted, the only time I have been truly scared and got on my knees and prayed to God was to NOT let the Yom Kippur War alert escalate to a nuclear exchange. It’s no wonder some of us “Boomers” are so damn crazy and used to live like there is no tomorrow because “no tomorrow” was a distinct possibility during the Cold War.

So I know from where you speak and as a “hillbiilly” from WV I know what’s it’s like to not have power for an extended period due to heavy snow so we were always prepared.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with being prepared.

What I am referring to is the paranoia and self-induced hysteria that some on the right (and NOT just the extreme right) are exhibiting at this time. Again, as a past competition shooter this shit is cutting into my sport.

That being said, do you not agree with my two historic examples of organized resistance that IF there were a revolt the government could quell it successfully if they were determined to do so.

And “IF” the revolt WERE to go the way that some on the far right would want, a warlord society will prevail and it’s fucked for all.

I have read/heard a good point one time:

“If you don’t want gun limits, move to Somolia and see how you like it”.

Also, since both you & I served in the “Sandbox”, remember when firearms were limited to one per Iraqi household? That was imposed by our government and I don’t ever recall the conservative entertainment radio talkers calling BS on that.

And last but most important:

Remember who the REAL enemy is:

It AIN’T Obama (who I NEVER voted for) its the CONSERVATIVE RELIGIOUS Muslim faction who fears and resents our great freedoms. All we are doing is making it easier for them. We both know time is their greatest weapon and wasting time on some of this “from my cold dead hands” BS is playing right into their (and other enemies of freedom) hands.

I was based in an “undisclosed” base out in the middle of nowhere over there in 2002-2003 and I’ll never forget one poster:

The main point of your article says that the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution provides American citizens with an unqualified, unambiguous right to keep and bear arms… This is totally not true, as some posters above have pointed out. The 2nd amendment IS qualified and ambiguous. You can’t just point out certain verbiage of the amendment and leave off the inconvenient parts.

SparkleCity is right in his above post about most of the ammo being gone at Academy Sports in Greenville. I went to the new Academy Sports in Columbia, last weekend, and the ammo shelves were bare. There were about 6 dudes hanging around the area discussing the “future” of America.

SC certainly doesn’t corner the market when it comes to rednecks, but this Redneck Nation crowd is definitely getting ready for something. At least in the Civil War we had drummer boys who could make us feel proud when we marched off to die for the cause. Maybe this time we can get motivated by country-rap or sumpin’.
