NO WORD YET ON INCENTIVES …
Cabela’s – a Nebraska-based outdoor retailer – this week announced its plans to open a 100,000-square foot superstore in Greenville, S.C. as part of a national expansion.
“South Carolinians are part of an exceptional outdoor tradition and share the Cabela’s lifestyle and values,” Cabela’s Chief Executive Officer Tommy Millner said in a statement. “We wanted to build a store in the Greenville area to recognize that. We are also excited about the opportunity to expand our retail footprint in the Southeast.”
According to the company, the new superstore will employ “235 full-time, part-time and seasonal employees,” most of whom will “come from Greenville and the surrounding area.”
It’s not immediately clear what – if any – taxpayer-funded incentives Cabela’s received in exchange for its decision to locate this retail facility at Magnolia Park, a newly redeveloped shopping center located at the junction of Interstates 85 and 385. The announcement was a joint release prepared by the company and the City of Greenville, S.C. – apparently with no involvement from the S.C. Department of Commerce or Gov. Nikki Haley.
Cabela’s – which did $2.7 billion worth of business in 2010 – currently operates forty stores nationwide as well as its online business. In addition to its new Greenville store, the company is also opening a new store in Minnesota.

I ain’t been there yet mainly because most “brestruants” up the price for their stuff just for the “view”. If “Hairy Bubba’s” wings are 15 cents apiece and “Twin Peaks are 50 cents, just to pay for the view, I’m eating my wings & drinking my beer at “Hairy Bubba’s”
For a bit of history: Twin peaks is down in the “hole” where the UPS center USED to be and where I worked at back in 1975-1976.
Greenville Mall was just being bulldozed for developement during that time. The biggest red fox I have ever seen ran across the road (from where Cabella’s will be located) as I was leaving UPS. I can still see the fox running across the road and remember thinking: “run while you can little buddy,your hunting grounds are shrinking fast”

BTW, I’ve been ordering from Cabella’s for years. They’ve got some nice stuff. I usually stop by Bass Pro Shops in Concord when I’m up that way so it’s all good as far as I’m concerned.

Several weeks ago I went to the movies for the first time in over 15 years and I couldn’t handle all the louts talking on their cell phones. Some dude behind me kept putting his feet on the top of my seat and I politely informed him of his options. He went and got the manager and I was told that my options were that I could leave or he would call 911. So much for a night out at the movies.
I love a good retail trade tax incentive. The people must be encouraged to buy things they don’t need and to provide unskilled labor. Let us not stop on our quest to transfor SC to a completely zero-sum economy.
I was in Wheeling, WV over Christmas. When Cabelas came there, there was nothing. They had to move a bluff to construct the store and distribution center. Today, the area looks like the Woodruff Road area looks now. When a successful business brings more jobs, customers and businesses to the area, everyone benefits. Only someone with a myopic view of the world, or no appreciation for economic development, would be against tax incentives to businesses.

I’m really glad to hear Cabelas is coming to South Carolina!! Just hate the fact that it will be a 2 hour drive to me. But, I am still delighted to hear this.
