POWER CONFERENCE CLAIMS SEVENTH STRAIGHT TITLE
This week’s showdown in South Florida wasn’t the “national championship game …” no matter what the Bowl Championship Series (BCS)’ computers tell you. The real title game was played a month ago in Atlanta, Georgia – when No. 2 Alabama defeated third-ranked Georgia 32-28 for the Southeastern Conference championship.
This week’s game was an afterthought, which the Crimson Tide made perfectly clear in steamrolling past the “top-ranked” not-so-fighting Irish of Notre Dame, 42-14.
“This is potato famine bad,” one Irish fan noted on Twitter.
Of course it was a feast for Tide fans – and fans of college football’s most dominant football conference. Alabama’s evisceration of Notre Dame gave head coach Nick Saban’s team its third national title in four years – only the third time in the modern era such a feat has been accomplished. Add Auburn’s 2010 title to the mix and the last four BCS champions hail from the “Heart of Dixie.”
And add a pair of Florida crowns (2006 and 2008) sandwiched around an LSU championship in 2007 and the SEC is the proud owner of seven straight national titles.
And to think … had Oregon and Kansas State not lost big games on the same day last month, Alabama wouldn’t have even gotten a chance to play for the national championship. The best team in college football would have been frozen out. Also, based on the way Notre Dame played even the most visceral SEC hater has to admit that a far better title game would have been a ‘Bama-Georgia rematch.
Make no mistake, the SEC isn’t invincible. Clemson proved this in the Chick-fil-A Bowl by dispatching eighth-ranked LSU, while Louisville emphatically rebuked the notion of SEC superiority by blowing out Florida in the Sugar Bowl. But Georgia, South Carolina, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt and Mississippi all won bowl games against solid competition – and Alabama’s blowout win on the game’s biggest stage adding an emphatic exclamation point.

And before any of the tater SEC haters say only USC chants SEC after a win. The Alabama crowd was in fact chanting SEC as well last night. THE SEC, 6 bowl wins this year, 5 teams in the final top 10 both AP and Coaches, and now a 7th straight BCS championships and 9 since it started in 1998.
Point of interest, SEC wins 7 national championships in a row, but only 28.57% of the teams competing in the SEC can lay any claim to participating in establishing that record, and it took one team to win over half of those. I’m glad Bama’s Coat tails are big enough to hold all of y’all, because your egos must be heavy
When my team finishes 3rd in the SEC East and 8th in the country in the SAME SEASON……I don’t see anything wrong with a little conference pride. I was happy to watch Bama embarrass ND, but I promise you I never said roll tide.
And not to mention that it actually 33.3%; since A&M and Mizzou weren’t added before a new team won it would be based on 12 participants not 14. 4 teams out of 12 have won titles in the last 7 years, which is 1/3 or 33%. Only this year was it 28.57% out of those 7 years. If you go with the 9 wins since the BCS was started it could be 5/12 or 5/14 (41.66% or 35.71%) is there another conference that can claim in the last 15 years either 40% or close enough to it of its teams have won a national title? I mean it’s like Dabo when he claimed the just before the bowl game that the ACC has 11 NC in the last 30 years when you add in all the titles that were won by Miami and the others, (and the ones that weren’t even AP titles just claimed by someone) because Miami or FSU weren’t even in the ACC at the time they won. In fact in the last 30 year the ACC only has 2.5. 2 for FSU in 93 and 99 and a shared title in 90 with GT( and Colorado). Dabo couldn’t even add, because when he said 30 years it eliminated his own schools. Clemson’s was 31 years ago and therefore cannot count in the last 30. So by your math 2.5/12 20.83% or with the addition of now Pitt and Syracuse in 2014 it will be 17.85% of the ACCs teams have won in the last 30 years. But also back to the point for the last 7 years ZERO percent of ACC teams won it that span. Just saying
A fair point, but I’m sure you can recognize that sometimes, those numbers can be inflated based simply on the perception of strength of schedule. When most SEC teams start pre-season high, and they can then claim their only losses are to other highly ranked SEC teams (who also were given the same advantage), then you can understand the frustration. South Carolina had some big wins fair and square, and I won’t take that away from them. That is said as a Clemson fan. But Florida and LSU are case examples of SEC teams getting unfairly ranked. the LSU Clemson score was close, but only because of one or two bad turnovers by Clemson. Anyone watching that game, especially the 4th quarter, will clearly tell you who the stronger team was. And the score is pretty clear on who was stronger between the low ranked louisville team v. the no. 3 Gators. Bottom line is some SEC teams are as highly ranked as they are because of the incestuousness of the SEC and the insistence by pollsters to treat them holier than thou…
and in fairness, Notre Dame, Southern Cal, and Michigan got the same treatment for years throughout the early 2000’s, but because they were not taking part in a conference that also all got the same treatment, their fall from glory was usually in weeks 2 or 3.

The meteoric rise of the SEC as the dominate force in college football has interestingly coincided with the exponential decline of both the American culture and economy. I suppose for Alabama and Carolina fans they can look back at the last four years and say “Man Congress and Barry are running us into the shithouse but man could the South play some ball!” Perhaps the way my fellow redneck brethren enjoy throwing their middle finger in the air to the rest of the country who fails to excel at a grown man’s sport is in essence some vengeful spite at having to endure the War of Northern aggression and subsequent occupation.
