CHANGES COMING IN WAKE OF CONNECTICUT SHOOTING
Government schools in South Carolina are making structural renovations in an effort to improve “sight lines” and “visual access” to entranceways in the wake of the fatal school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut earlier this month.
How many schools are making these renovations? And how much will these projects cost taxpayers?
It’s unclear … the only information we’ve been able to obtain at this stage has been purely anecdotal. We know that one Midlands, S.C. government school is knocking out brick walls and installing “large glass windows” in its main office during the Christmas break so that its staff can keep a closer eye on the main entrance to the facility. That obviously isn’t cheap.
Similar renovations at schools in other districts across the state are also reportedly in the works.
Will any of these contemplated renovations make any of these government schools any safer? No clue. What we do know is that South Carolina’s worst-in-the-nation education system certainly has plenty of money laying around to cover these costs – meaning state lawmakers shouldn’t feel pressured to pour any more new money into their coffers next year.

What is considered a “government school?”
I would assume gov’t funding.
Another attempt by Folks to gain traction for the benefit of Howie Rich’s grand experiment in undermining public education.
Hell, SC always sells out cheap. He may be on to something.
Having read many times how you think the SC education system sucks, you are probably going to (or are) send your kids to a private school, but just as a father, don’t you think either public or private schools should do everything possible to ensure the safety of their students? Maybe cameras covering the entrances would do the job, but someone has to be watching the monitor.
After Newtown, it might be a good idea to harden the doors. In any event, if they did nothing and another tradgedy happened, you’d be all over them.
Well said. Besides, changes that make it easier to monitor entrance are not all together bad. Personally, if WallMart wants me pass a metal detector to leave, why shouldn’t a school make me go through one to go in?
I think they could best keep the children safe by turning the building into a giant safe type mechanism, with no windows and metal walls.
You have the principle turn a combination lock on the front safe doors @ 7am, admit the children and spin the lock behind them.
@ 3:30PM you reverse the process.
Lot’s of safe learnin’ going on that way. No one has to worry about anything anymore.
Time for another property tax increase to make it happen, and I know the perfect person to run the the election but she first has to finish her retirement planning in Richland.
HA1 Perhaps Walmart should make YOU pass through the detector when you go in.
That’s right, we will put up a glass window enabling the psychos to blow out the entire main entrance while they are walking up…
Based on my observation, South Carolina has the worst private schools in the nation…
SAT statistics do indicate SC private schools are the worst in the nation.
We also have the worst-in-the-nation dumb-ass white people- population. If you assholes would get fixed,or use rubbers,or something, things wouldn’t be so bad…Hell,if you’ve got a decent size pecker,I’ll suck it to stop you from procreating;it takes a village…
