He is quite intelligent, and a great English teacher. I had a friend tell me he went through all of high school and never read an entire book at Chapin. He wouldn’t of have passed Mr. Compton’s class. I read real literature like Frankenstein, Gulliver’s Travels, Paradise Lost and Beowulf and I still use the skills he taught me to analyze life’s situations. Read “Beowulf” then “Grendal” or “Paradise Lost” and “Paradise Regained” and it will help a lot of you realize good must have evil in order to exist, even though what is ritous and what is evil is always relative.
They should have beat the living crap out of him and then fired him. Better yet, let him keep his job but he has to go down to the main entrance to Parris Island and do a little stomping first. Then he can give a proper lecture on consequences. In addition, we could test the theory on “fixing stupid.”

Surprised that the teacher is liberal? Most are. They take low paying, often thankless jobs in the hope that they can contribute to society by reaching our children and inspiring them to think for themselves.
Perhaps he should just stick to teaching the book like Ms. Crabapple in “The Simpsons.”

Spring Valley High had a “Honors/AP” (Dr. Whittle) English teacher who inspired his students to achieve excellence and I’m fairly sure he never stepped on a flag – quite a few toes, but never a flag.
I spend a lot of time in high schools, I get to see a lot of teachers in action – there is a better way to “inspire children” than by stomping on the American Flag. Perhaps he could have illustrated his point (giving him the benefit of the doubt here that he had one) with the innumerable pictures of folks around the world trampling on the American flag.

The State had a piece 5 or 6 years ago that found that based on a calculated hourly rate of pay teachers are the third highest paid group in the state behind doctors and lawyers. Don’t know if they included college teachers in that group.
It appears that when teachers think of how much they earn, they forget to consider how many more days a year that everyone else, but Congressmen, work than they do.

Why are we just now getting this story? A teachers job is to educate our children. Not impose their political views or personal agendas on our youth. An act like this breeds hatred. This story obviously was suppressed. By who? What people fail to realize about our first amendment rights is that your rights end where another persons rights begin. Nothing can warrant taking The American Flag down and stomping it with their feet. A teacher is suppose to be a role model and set an example to each one of their students. This person certainly is in the wrong profession and needs to be removed from teaching. I cannot believe that any parent would want this type of teacher, not educating, but tainting the minds of our youth. Teachers these folks look up to you. Do the right thing and be the role model that all your students will look up to. The administration needs to do their job and dismiss this teacher. To show the students and parents of this district that this type of behavior will not be tolerated. Ok hhuuhh?? here it is. My salary as a 5 year teacher with a Master’s degree is $42,270 per year. Divided by 52 weeks, it comes out to a little over 800 per week. Divide that by 40 hours (what I am suppose to work) and it comes out to $20.32 per hour. Oh, I know, I only work 9 months. But you see, I only get paid for 9 months of work. I simply spread my check out over 12 months. And during the 3 months I am “relaxing” I am working at school writing lesson plans, looking over test scores and getting rested up for the next year. By the way, how much do you make?
I don’t understand why teachers(or cops, or anyone else) that are bitching about their pay don’t just go a get a different job to make more money.

D. Hiller- Do I think it is acceptable? I attend CHS, and I know Mr. Compton. It is a fact that he did this because he was teaching a lesson on symbolism to prove a point, not because it was his own personal belief. No, it is not okay to destroy school property, but when was anything destroyed? A lesson was taught to students about symbolism and what value a symbol holds. He used the American Flag as a demonstration of his lesson and nothing else.
Who cares that he is a liberal teacher? This is totally unnecessary. In no way did Mr. Compton do any damage. Someone was angry and instead of asking Mr. Compton his reasoning, he was wrongly suspended.
For those who do not attend CHS, the school is filled with kids who have filthy rich parents that sue and complain until they have their way. CHS has been looking for a reason to terminate the Gay Straight Alliance that Mr. Compton is a proud sponsor of, and this scene was the way to do so.
The fact is D. Hiller, that people have their own beliefs. But Mr. Compton was not expressing his in any way. He was simply teaching his students the value of symbolism.
This man taught me in my high school English class. He is a very good teacher. In public school in South Carolina he is a very rare element; someone who would encourage one to analyze all aspects of a situation before finalizing thoughts and opinions. We read Frankenstein in his class and I still use the same skills he taught me in my career; he taught me about nature vs. nurture, science vs devinity, and much more. Having gone through public school in SC (Even in honors classes, not to mention one of the “best” in the state), he was one of very few people taught me how much a quality education can benefit your future. He spoke about his family with admiration and love, and helped me in a subject that I personally struggled with.
One should not have to fear for their job anytime they do something that would encite panic in the conservative south. What he did is protected by the constitution, even if he is among the minority in Chapin he does not deserve to loose his job. We must tolerate things like this in order to prosper from the diversity the US has to offer, it fosters growth. I support Mr. Compton as he made a positive impact on my life and helped evolve a love of reading that does not exist in a SC high school environment. If you feel he should lose his job you need to better understand the protections provided by our laws, they are there for a reason.
For those of you who think I am another crazy liberal, I am extremely conservative in my political views, but come from a liberal upbringing (my mom’s a democrat and my dad’s been socialist since before Obama was born). People like him help foster independent minded individuals who form opinions based on reason, not concensus. People who question public opinion are neccessary, and it is time for SC to at the very least tolerate these people.
Good teacher or not, the man made a mistake in judgement… a pretty big one. Apparently, these were Sophomore students… not even Seniors. He also failed to consider that this was school district property… and not his.
I just would like to put on here as a student for the school that Mr. Compton is an unbelievably amzing and caring teacher. At Chapin we pride ourselves on not letting students fall through the cracks. Our Principle, Mr. Ross, like to take credit for this, but us student know better. Student do well at Chapin because of teachers like Mr. Compton. Mr. Compton has always been a champion for the kids who are marginalized at Chapin. His classroom has been the safe haven for many an under dog during my time in school. One of the groups that he leads is the Chapin GSA (Gay Straight Allience) which I am a member of. Clubs like this were invented for kids who are put down to come together for survival. Parents and students alike have openly opposed the very existence of our (small) club at this school. I honestly believe that Mr. Compton’s suspendence is the results of years of pressure from parents and students to dispand our club, and that his display of symbolism (which many an English teacher has used as an example) was simply an excuse for bigotry.
I don’t support the Gay Straight Alliance Club but i do agree he is a good teacher who engages the students. the problem is he crossed the line and made some serious mistakes. It’s a reach to think his suspension has something to do with the GSA Club.
Compton’s point was the American flag is losing it’s value. The flags we see everyday don’t have real meaningp because we can go by them for a dollar at dollar general. If we are supposed to be the united states and our flag is of worth then Why is the flag so treated like nothing? we pass it, dont acknowledge it. We say the pledge of alligance and not even pay attention to the words. We see the flag everyday and never even consider the true meaning. Based on what little I know about this issue (a teacher was put on leave for stomping on the flag during a lesson) for whatever the reason, he made a bad decision. Sadly, I agree that Americans don’t value their freedom and the flag that stands for it as they used to do. Physically stomping on it — whether in front of minor students or adults — is an act of disrespect and sends a strong message. A wiser move would have been to query the students of the consequences for such an action. Or ask why they think it’s a disrespectful move for someone to do it. How about asking what can be done (what could they do) so that Americans appreciate the flag and what it symbolizes. Another issue that was mentioned, and an important one – the flag that he stomped on wasn’t his. It belonged to the school.
