Nikki Haley Won’t Appoint Herself To Jim DeMint’s Seat

S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley will not appoint herself to the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Jim DeMint, the first-term “Republican” told a South Carolina radio host. “No, I will not be appointing myself,” Haley told host Bob McLain of WORD (Greenville, S.C.). “That is not even not an option,…

“That is not even not an option, not something I am considering at all.”

DeMint’s surprise decision to resign his seat as South Carolina’s junior U.S. Senator gives Haley the power to name his interim replacement – and many presumed that the ambitious first-term governor would elevate herself to the seat.  Technically Haley couldn’t have appointed herself, though.  Instead she would have had to resign her post as governor first and then relied on S.C. Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell to appoint her.  McConnell is a longtime Haley antagonist and it wasn’t immediately clear whether he would have been willing to play ball with Haley on such an appointment – even if doing so cleared a path for him to the governor’s office.

“She would have been putting her political life in his hands,” one Palmetto political operative told FITS.

So who will Haley choose?

Fiscal conservatives are urging her to pick someone who will follow in DeMint’s footsteps, although conventional wisdom has Haley either selecting establishment Republican Tim Scott or a “caretaker” for the seat – possibly former S.C. Attorney General Henry McMaster or former U.S. Ambassador David Wilkins.

So with that triple negative does that really mean that she is considering it. If she wants to appoint someone as nutty and demented as Demint, I would say she should go with Big T.

Auction it off, Blago style.

Or give it to whoever her most able likely primary opponent is going to be in 2014 to get him out of the way.

Or to Sanford to further piss off all her detractors no end.

As self serving as she is, don’t, for one minute, think she has not given thought to selling the appointment. Probably will, just not as overtly as Blago. She will get her advice from Chief Keel, as in don’t use your personal cell, use staff. It’s harder to trace. And, delete emails, easier to deal with deleted emails, than what is in them!

Yeah, right. Lets take a poll on how many people think that was the first thing that crossed her mind when DeMint informed her of his impending resignation. Yea or Nay?

This statement is laughable on its face……..“She would have been putting her political life in his hands,” one Palmetto political operative told FITS.

1) If she cut the deal with McConnell and he agreed to appoint her that would have been good as gold. He couldn’t have done otherwise and maintained any credibility with anyone, friend or foe. Especially friend.

2) Cutting a deal of that magnitude with a rival/enemy is almost a certainty to be upheld.

3) McConnell may be shrewd, he may be ruthless, but he is not a damn liar……not with the move up from Light Gov. to Governor in the equation.

SparkleCity,

Do you hate Bob McClain as much as I do? He plays shitty intro music, waxes on and on about conspiracy theories and takes two calls a day from that crazy ass Rose.

When he’s not busy kissing Haley’s ass, that is.

Him and Russ Cassell would never have a job in a state/market where intelligence was a factor.

Never listened to talk radio until last January when I pledged to listen to it for a year while driving in the area. I have kept my word and one year is almost up.

I never realized how many bonafide nuts existed in and around me.

It’s damn scary I tell you. Bobby Mac, Rose, Russ, Rushbo…..how can one listen to that absurdness every day? No wonder my salesmen talk like such off their rocker fools when they come in each week. They stay mad as hell while spouting that drivel after hearing it.

Reply
SparkleCity December 7, 2012 at 7:54 am

I don’t hate them.

But you are right, Both Russ & Bob have their noses so far up Haley’s ass that they should be certified proctocologists(sp?).

You’ve got to realize that they are in it for the money hawking their schtick to scared/unsecure types and selling airtime for old folks homes, gold buying schemes and shit like that.

Kinda ties into what sweepin is posting above. They fill a niche for people who have no where else to go. If liberal talk radio WERE a big hit/money maker, I guarantee you most of these schlubs would become liberal in a New York minute.

It is sad that some people really believe these talk radio “DJ’s” really give a shit about what they are spouting off when they call in. It is kind of like the old howard Cosell days, some watched Howard because they loved to hate him.

I don’t listen to talk radio as much as I used to. It’s the same old shit every every day. The host rants about something or says some sarcastic remark to get the regular crowd listening and it’s always Obama’s fault, etc. And if you pay attention, its the same 5-10 callers (on local talk anyway) every fucking day saying the same thing every day. It is amusing and mildly entertainly at first then it wears on you (me anyway). The faithful/rabid listeners/callers aren’t happy unless they have something to worry/bitch about. In a way that is a good thing(it keeps them occupied).

Remember the old days in the local newspaper? it was the same 2 or 3 cranks who wrote in every week!!! Same with talk radio.

Here’s my own saying/belief on Russ,Bobby,Limpballs types:

“Dont put too much stock in anyone who sits on their ass and talks for a living (DJ’s,news/sports announcers excepted of course)”

I have a portable satellite radio and a docking station so I can move it from car to office. That is what I use most of the time. i still LIKE satellite radio but before the acquisition/merger, I was a RABID supporter of satellit radio in general. Don’t get me started on what a disappointment that has become……

Just who is this Conventional Wisdom? What is their voting record?

Appointing Glenn McConnell opens up the Pro Temp job for a Haley ally such as Peeler, getting her agenda passed, and paving her way for a second term.

Ok, Gov Haley can mend fences with the Charleston crowd. Glenn McConnell appointed to the US Senate would do just that. He will eat Mitch McConnell’s lunch. Glenn is a talented tactician and gifted orator. Not only that, he could well be the most vaunted senate parliamentarian in the history of the US Senate. He would be a solid voice for Republicans and a venerated model of how the Senate should be run. He will be the stop against Harry Reid. He will help South Carolina in so many ways. He is the right man for the job. He can run for the seat as the appointee. The deal goes like this: I will appoint Glenn as US Senator if you in Charleston promise to deliver Speaker Harrel to work with Pro Temp Peeler to get my agenda passed for a second term.

We have already seen what a Pro Temp Courson will be like. He is not to be trusted. He would make a good Lt Gov.. Put him to pasture!

In the history of South Carolina politics, appointing Glenn McConnell will be the move of the century. Finally, Sen Peeler can get to be the Pro Temp. Think about it. Lexington County will hold the two most powerful seats in South Carolina. And NO Jakie Knotts!!

This will take some courage. But Governor? Elections matter, and you should do what is right for Charleston, the US Senate, and Lexington County can showcase their political savvy once and for all and not just be fly over country for politicians coming in to work.

Thomas December 7, 2012 at 8:21 am

Yes, he did, me. Glenn has a sharp legal mind that can be used towards applying senate parliamentarian rules and procedures to run circles around the Democrats in the US Senate; to get GOP legislation passed, to use all available tactics to get the GOP agenda passed, to wrest control from Democrats in this particular aspect. Mitch McConnell obviously does not have the team in place to nuance the Democrats into submission. In fact, his style of kickbacks for votes is so 19th century. Do you know that having a US Senator with this ability could change the course of events in that chamber and bring back the Senate to the GOP? For years to come?

For a long term solution to getting legislation passed, to have an expert unmatched in a very important aspect of the US Senate, to have a Senator that will bring the GOP back into the majority for years to come, to have the GOP in a position to run circles around Democrat tacticians and parliamentarians for years to come is how South Carolina’s Governor should use her office to advance Republican Party influence.

There will be many conservative Senators in the next few election cycles to write legislation. We have the rare opportunity to put in the US Senate a man whose unique legal acumen would become a most valuable asset for those Senators to get their bills passed for years to come. By becoming the only GOP senate parliament rules expert alive, and Glenn has this gift of detail and tactics rare in a politician, South Carolina could exert influence for years and years to come. Think amendments and riders! Think Tactics! Think legal maneuvers! Think nuanced and complicated rules and precedent! Think Glenn McConnell!

I know I hit a nerve because only a Democrat would oppose such an idea.

David Kirkpatrick December 7, 2012 at 2:24 pm

Glenn has HIV-AIDS. He may be Winston Churchill the second but he has one-third the energy of healthy people. A big reason he gladly gave up his senate seat for the slower pace of Lt. Governor.
