ONE DOWN, FOUR TO GO
University of South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is officially an All-American … but will he be the Gamecocks’ first unanimous first-team selection?
He sure as hell should be …
Clowney – who leads the NCAA in sacks and tackles for losses – was named to the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) first team All-American squad this week. Along with the Associated Press, Football Writers Association of America, Sporting News and Walter Camp Football Foundation, the AFCA names one of five All-American teams officially recognized by the NCAA.
If a player makes one of those teams, he’s an All-American. If he makes at least three, he’s a consensus All-American. If he makes all five, he’s a unanimous All-American.
Throughout its history, South Carolina has had 20 players named to various first-team All-American squads. Of those, only three players – George Rogers (1979, 1980), Del Wilkes (1984) and Melvin Ingram (2011) were consensus selections. USC has never had a unanimous All-American.
In addition to All-American honors, Clowney is also up for the Bednarik (best defensive player), Lombardi (best lineman) and Nagurski (best defensive player) awards. The 6-foot-6, 256-pound Rock Hill, S.C. native – the former No. 1 national high school recruit and 2011 SEC Freshman of the Year – is also being touted as a possible 2013 Heisman Trophy candidate as well as a possible No. 1 overall NFL draft pick.
All richly deserved …
“He is quite simply the most disruptive force in college football,” our founding editor wrote recently of Clowney.
He’s also on the verge of becoming the most decorated Gamecock ever.
UPDATE: Also on the AFCA first-team All-American squad? Clemson University quarterback Tajh Boyd and center Dalton Freeman, who somehow managed to beat out Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel and Barrett Jones of Alabama.

and all those little orange puddles west of Frank Howard’s pebble are where JD sacked Tajh Boyd… OH YEAH! Ought to be ahead of Boyd in Heisman voting too.
Clowney is BEAST. He is not “a beast.” He IS Beast.
Freak of nature or student athlete? I report you, you decide.
retard or dumbass, you are both
I keep forgetting Clemson is such a super selective school. If half the spuds on your football team can read on an eighth grade level I’ll kiss your rosy red ass.
What makes you think that half the USC team can read at the 8th grade level? There’s a reason these athletes are provided tutors, note takers, a learning center, mandatory study hall, etc… for those tough majors like African American Studies; Sports Management; Retailing; and Sociology.
what makes you think you actually know anything about these kids? your opinion? well you know what they say about opinions? skip to the point they say you are an asshole
I didn’t say half Clemson’s team can’t read on an eighth grade level, I said half the spuds on the team. Would you care to dispute that? I’m certain that is the case on the SC team as well. Don’t be so touchy. I forget, what are Tajh and Sammy’s majors? Yawn.
BTW, Brad and VOR, You guys would be a lot happier fellows if you had gotten into a really top notch school. Apparently you both wear your Clemson education on your sleeves like some sort of badge of accomplishment. I hang around a little tougher crowd, but if it makes you feel like Einsteins, good for you. The really smart kids I grew up with weren’t interested in Carolina or Clemson. I wasn’t. But I love Gamecock sports, especially the last four years.
no no no scsince60, these two have made it clear they didnt go to Clemsux either. In fact they repeatedly say they dont care about either school, yet here they always are, and always trying to bash USC or the SEC. Obviously they went some place like ITT tech but keep claiming they went somewhere better to fell good about themselves. Its a clear case of the Napoleon complex.
scsince60 – Actually I did graduate from a school that pretty much a household name, and it wasn’t USC or Clemson. Are you implying that USC and Clemson are “really top notch schools”?
clemsux – Keep telling yourself that, I know it makes you feel like you got a less inferior education than you really did. Where I attended, it took a little more than a non-bouncing tuition check and a minimum SAT score to get admitted.
Hey BWS, well obviously all it took was for you to blow the Dean of Admission at Midlands Tech, but I really am not worried about someone overcompensating for something by saying you don’t care when it is blatantly obvious you do for some reason. Hmmmm, that little man complex you have must suck.
LOL apparently so does he. (suck that is)
Crack Dealer Dad should be a proud man today. When he gets out, think of all the fun he can have with his son’s future…
Give him two years in the NFL and we’ll see how much trouble he’s in. Clowny is no Lattimore when it comes to reputation. Clowny’s not exactly the sharpest pencil in the box. Strong and smart don’t always go together, Clowny is living proof of that.
His name is Clowney, you fucktard.
I’ll bet Tajh Boyd can spell Clowney’s name in his sleep.
He may still need some recovery time before he can spell his own name again, but yeah, eventually he will never forget how to spell Clowney.
Clowney has not hidden pot in his underwear, or stolen laptops, or hit his girlfriend. He has done nothing to suggest a character problem that is even close to the level of other athletes. Stephen Garcia like to have a beer and it got him tossed.
Clempson fans will say anything to make excuses for their pathetic team.
And their coach is still talking and making pathetic excuses.
Here’s $4. Go buy a ticket to the ACC Championship game.
Clowney has been arrested too moron. When he was still in high school he paraded around all the bars in 5 Points underage as all the bouncers let him in for his “celebrity” status. Also, Clemson does have superior admittance standards to SCar. Please see your own school’s report on that… http://www.dailygamecock.com/index.php/component/k2/item/865-in-state?-30-gpa%3F-1000-sat%3F-you%E2%80%99re-in
Dan, Please see above comment about Clemson academics. Can’t imagine how puffed up you guys would be if you had attended, let’s say, Davidson.
Cant argue with a tater. Even when they are wrong they still think they are right. Never once was Clowney under arrest. the funniest part is Dan even calls someone else a moron defending his false point. So what does that make dan? A dumbass.
While Clemson’s site lists they want a B+ sverage (which is a 3.0 and also USC’s grade) they claim they want a 1700 SAT. USC posts that for INSTATE applicants they will accept a 1000 SAT with the 3.0(it is afterall a state school) Clemson’s website does say you can get lower scores to get in. here is an exact quote “Note also that a few students were accepted with test scores and grades below the norm. This is because Clemson takes into consideration the rigor of your high school courses, your extracurricular involvement, your legacy status, and your personal comments (an optional feature on the Clemson application).” We all know rigor of a schedlue has nothing to do with the SAT, and if your papa is a big alumn you can get in with lower scores too, or if you have a personal comment perhaps saying a lie like “Dabo is the best coach ever” you might get in. It just doesnt say how low, or how good of a comment you need. Also it doesnt say that is for instate only or out of state to get the lower scores, while USC says it has higher guildelines for out of state. Payed for by state dollars, you kind of have to help the instate students. So my question is what do you think you proved here?
Clowney was not “arrested.” He was detained by police officers for being in a bar and being under 21 years of age. After being detained and checking his ID, he was told to leave the bar. The police filed a “report” but did not arrest him.
Besides, being in a bar is quite different than hitting your girlfriend or putting pot in your crotch. (And then being stupid enough to tell the police that you had pot in your crotch.)
I went to Furman, fucktard, the place where you MIGHT get accepted if you have a 1400 on your SAT. True story . . . Billy Price, the valedictorian at Clemson a few years back . . . dropped out of Furman because he made two D’s and a C- in his first term at Furman. He transferred to Clemson and graduated #1.
Dan-
Clowney was never arrested in Five Points. He was erroneously detained.

Love this quote: “Note also that a few students were accepted with test scores and grades below the norm.” Fucking administrators at Clemson cannot understand statistics.
If there is a “norm” then half of the students that are accepted are “below the norm.”
Half of the students selected is not “a few.”
What is Clowny’s major? Did he go with African-American Studies or did he up it to the much more difficult Sociology or Retailing major?
Nuclear Physics.
What it boils down to is this: Our plantation beat your plantation. See y’all next year for another poke in that old eye.
Mike – I think you have to be able to speak English for that major.
Hey Braaad, Do you want the single eye poke next year at Willy-B, or the Stooges style, double poke? NyukNyukNyuk!! Or should I say Nuk, Nuk, Nuk!!!? Get it?
