GAMECOCKS OUTLAST CLEMSON FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT RIVALRY WIN
Thanks to a clutch performance from backup quarterback Dylan Thompson – and four-and-a-half sacks from standout defensive lineman Jadeveon Clowney – the University of South Carolina football team took its fourth game in a row over arch rival Clemson. In the process the No. 12 Gamecocks made Steve Spurrier the winningest coach in school history – with 65 career victories over his eight years in Columbia, S.C. (including a remarkable 30 wins in his last three seasons).
“We were very fortunate … again,” Spurrier said after the game. “Seems like when we play Clemson they don’t play very well, and we played well enough to make a few more plays than they did.”
South Carolina’s 27-17 win was part of a banner day for the powerful Southeastern Conference – which went 4-0 against the Atlantic Coast Conference on “Rivalry Saturday.” In addition to the Gamecocks’ win, No. 4 Florida defeated No. 10 Florida State 37-26 while No. 3 Georgia demolished unranked Georgia Tech 42-10. And in a battle of conference bottom feeders, Vanderbilt pummeled Wake Forest 55-21.
Can anybody say “Anybody Can Compete?”
The Gamecocks (10-2, 6-2 SEC) hadn’t pulled a “four-peat” over the Tigers (10-2, 7-1 ACC) in more than half a century – dating all the way back to 1951-54. In fact prior to its current streak, USC hadn’t beaten Clemson in consecutive games since 1970 – when both teams competed in the ACC.
USC’s win also gives them double-digit victories in back-to-back years for the first time ever – truly uncharted territory for a program that literally defined mediocrity up until about three seasons ago.
South Carolina won for the third time in a row this year without star running back Marcus Lattimore – who is out until 2014 after suffering a serious knee injury against Tennessee last month. The Gamecocks also won without the services of starting quarterback Connor Shaw, who re-injured his foot in last week’s win over Wofford.
How’d the Gamecocks manage that? By shutting down a Tiger offense that had amassed an astounding 205 points and 2,442 yards in its last four games – an offense which came out of the gates looking like it was going to put up similar numbers against one of the top defensive units in the nation.
No. 11 Clemson racked up 163 yards and 14 points during the first quarter – and looked as though it was well on its way to sprinting past South Carolina. But the Gamecock defense collectively stiffened, surrendering only 3 points and 185 yards during the game’s final three quarters.
In fact defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward’s unit held Tiger quarterback Tajh Boyd under 200 yards passing for only the third time in his career – and limited superstar wide receiver Sammy Watkins to just four catches for 37 yards. Boyd – whose Heisman Trophy stock was soaring after his 466-yard, 8-touchdown performance against N.C. State – was held to 183 yards passing with only one touchdown and two interceptions.
“I’m really, really proud of our defense,” Spurrier said. “That’s one of the best offenses in the country and we held them down pretty well.”
Of course Boyd, Watkins and Co. were on the field for less than seven minutes in the second half – as the Gamecocks were able to consistently maintain possession of the football thanks to a workmanlike performance from Thompson and several clutch conversions on long third down plays.
The redshirt sophomore from Boiling Springs, S.C. completed 23 of 41 passes for 310 yards and three touchdowns in his second career start – looking much sharper than he did during his last extended action (in last month’s road loss to No. 4 Florida). Thompson’s favorite target? Sophomore Bruce Ellington, who caught seven passes for 72 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Junior wideout Ace Sanders caught six passes for a career-high 119 yards and a touchdown.
Thompson also showed surprising speed and mobility – including a 20-yard scamper on a third-and-nineteen play late in the fourth quarter that set up his game-clinching touchdown pass to Ellington.
“We couldn’t disrupt him,” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said of Thompson. “He threw the ball incredibly well. He was the difference in the game.”
South Carolina was able to maintain possession by converting on third down plays. USC converted 11 of 21 third downs against the Tigers – better than 50 percent. Entering the game, Clemson’s defense was limiting opponents to a 33 percent third-down conversion rate.
As a result, USC enjoyed a commanding 2-to-1 time of possession advantage in the game – although Spurrier’s squad did its best to keep the Tigers in the game by committing 11 penalties for a total of 110 yards.
“We made a lot of mistakes,” he said.
Fortunately a dominating performance by Clowney and the rest of the Gamecock defense bailed them out. In addition to his 4.5 sacks (giving him a school record 13 on the year), Clowney also forced one of Boyd’s two interceptions with a monster pass rush right up the gut of the Clemson defense.
“We couldn’t get the ball in the third period,” said Swinney. “We just couldn’t stop them on third down. The third quarter was huge. We had too many penalties, too many turnovers and South Carolina did a great job of controlling the ball.”
After winning his first game against USC in 2008, Swinney has now lost four in a row.
“I just want to apologize to our fan base, to our seniors, to everyone,” he said. “I really appreciate the environment that these fans have created these past few seasons. This loss really hurts.”

Spurrier outcoached Daboohoo with a 2nd string QB, RB, tackle, gimpy Clowney, etc.
SEC! SEC! SEC!
Did you ever notice how after the first one or two games beating up on some unknown school Clemson fans think they should be awarded the national championship by acclamation? Then, they start beating up on Wake Forest, Duke, Virginia, and these places that only play football so they can field a basketball team under the NCAA rules and they say again they should be given the National Championship? Then, they play a REAL football program, such as the SEC programs, and they get their asses kicked all over the field. Happens year after year. Someday those hayseeds that live up there in the woods will give it up and admit that they are inferior to the SEC, that their program is no better than a Pop Warner squad, and that a recruit looking at schools needs to consider that there is no future up there. Despite all this, some jackleg named Dabo tries to find some excuse for being butt kicked by the SEC or the Big East (as in West Virginia) other than that the ACC is athletically challenged, that real football players don’t commit to a place like Clemson when they can shine in a real league such as the SEC or Big 10 or Pac10, and that second tier mentality translates into second tier coaches and staff who they have to pay ridiculous salaries to attract. No other reason they would go out in the woods of NW South Carolina except for money. Face it Clemson, and I can say this because I didn’t go to Clemson or USC, but you just SUCK. If West Virginia didn’t prove it to you, the butt-kicking administered by Spurrier and crew (without Lattimore and using their BACKUP QB) for three years now should show you. There is no excuse. Get over it. Don’t even try to pretend that you are BCS bowl worthy. The entire ACC, including Maryland and Half Ass U, are a bunch of wannabees. BCS alternatives or reorganization of college sports? How about disbanding these second tier programs such as Clemson and putting the money towards education. Admittedly, Clemson does do that fairly well.
Compliments of ESPN
What did we learn in the ACC in Week 13? Glad you asked.
SEC > ACC. And it is not even close. It was a disastrous weekend for the ACC in its head-to-head matchups against the top conference in all the land, going 0-4 on a pitiful Saturday. The average score in those four ACC-SEC matchups was not pretty: SEC 40-19. And it was the first time since 2009 that Clemson, Florida State and Georgia Tech all lost their in-state rivalry games.
Dabo Swinney and Clemson were manhandled on their home turf by SEC foe South Carolina.
You can call us USC.
You can call us Carolina.
We are THE University of South Carolina Fighting Gamecocks … and we own your lousy ass Dat Boy!
USC deserves credit for the win, and that is all. They seemed to go backwards as often as they went forward, and the game was 20-17 in the fourth quarter. The above drivel from ESPN about “manhandling” may apply to Clowney, as he clearly came to play, but ESPN has let its financial interests cloud its reporting. I have to say also that the commentating last night did sound like an SEC home network, with Millen making shit up as he went along. But Clemson had its chance and simply did not succeed.
Face – you weren’t listening to the same ESPN BS the rest of us heard evidently. Spurrier had Clemson’s number from the end of the first quarter on and ESPN kept trying to make it look like Clempson had a chance.
As I mentioned, the game was 20-17 in the fourth quarter. If that does not qualify as a chance, I’m not sure what does.
yabba dabba doodoo dabo just lost 2 dem coots AGAIN! hahahahaha
Oh Dumbo Swinney shot off the mouth one too many times AGAIN. He’s just like Haley…..Dumbo with a big mouth!
And Nookie Haley was decked out in her Clemson orange, which made it doubly sweet.
You got that straight, south mauldin. If anyone wants to see 2012 go away, it’s Trikki. And if anyone doesn’t want to see November 2013 arrive, it’s Dabo.
I look foward to all the excuses all the tiny kitties will have in the up coming weeks. Clemson sucks, the ACC sucks, which also went 0-4 today against the SEC. I guess the truth also sucks doesnt it losers?
I’ll give you the biggest excuse of all. Money.
Clemson pays?
ACC looked awesome today in their matchups vs SEC. I can see why so many fans think the two conferences are such a close match. I can’t understand why any school like Maryland would jump ship?
Poor bitter kitties, Leaving in the 4thQ. Dorkbo giving up w 3 minutes to go and punting. Priceless. Truly impressed w USC defense. That was a ton of Heisman candidates to defense all at once.
See what happens when you play ranked teams little kitties. Can’t score 8 TDs like its duke or wake.
Haha…no Heismen for Boyd. Didn’t deserve it in the first place.
Oh yes…63-17….we remember. Thanks losers. Cling to the past.
Clem’s signature game of the year, losing by only ten to the Cocks. Tough day for the Atlantic Coast Conference. Congratulations to Dabo and Co. for ten terrific wins on the season.
Great headline…well played.
im sorry but i have to go again. the media bias towards the SEC is real. I mean never would the SEC sweep the rival week. Oh wait they. Well look at it this way taters, the SEC had less wins today over the ACC than Clowney had sacks on the heisman hopeful Boyd. hahaha. Clemson sucked it up. Morris is an idiot if he stays although after that where could he go? Dabo is Spurrier’s bitch yet again and always. Thats some woodshed as someone said. Hell Pop Warner himself would be upset at how his little league teams looked today. Well there are always 365 days to spin this to a “we will win this year” or a “why the histoty shows it may still be important now” scenerio. The flat out truth is it all adds up to “Carolina just won again”. Later taters. CU next year.
no media biased. The SEC year after year cleans everyone clock. If you want to stop the medias biased in favor of the SEC, start beating the SEC.
And this just in, Clowney has sacked Boyd again… Looks like Ol ‘Tau may want to hold off packing for his trip to New York (unless the Jets hire him to replace Suchez after Tebow takes a walk)
Man was a game! Looks to me like it took The Head Ball Coach about 20 minutes to prove that even while playing a second string (although extremely talented) quarterback that USC “…ain’t Clemson…” and as we’ve noted in the past, the SEC ain’t the Amateur Coaches Conference, poor lil’Dabo’a Weenie….
You are an idiot. Plain and simple.
Idiot you say?
I won my bets.
Taj won’t be going to New York.
Clowney sacked Taj’s ass in every quarter except the 2nd so he sacked him twice in the fourth.
Our second string QB threw for 310 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 73 more yards.
An SEC team will most likely be playing for the National Championship (again) .
Dabo and company claim they beat themselves (again) proving that Dabo’s a Weenie. He got beat by a better team playing their second string quarterback.
You are right about one thing, it took the HBC 20 minutes and 2 seconds to prove that the Amateur Coach’s Conference ain’t the SEC. USC had the ball the other 39 minutes and 58 seconds.
Was Watkins even in the game? It was easy to tell that Boyd was there, they showed him picking grass out of his face mask after Clowney climbed off him. Who was that little squirt on the sidelines in the Clempson sweatshirt, looked like he might be coaching JV ball at some local high school. It’s amazing what happens when a bunch of overrated ACCers meet a real defense.
Dabo runs his mouth even when they get their ass kicked.
Can’t he just shut up?
Time to fire him.
Clemson should be calling the Big 12 on the phone begging them for an invite.
Don’t you just KNOW that Dabo, his players, and ALL of Tiger Nation heaved a sigh of relief when the word came down that Dylan Thompson would be the starting QB?
“Lawd have mercy. We gone win tonight.”
The bitter kitties have already started spinning it. Remember when the line (the coach, the team, AND the fans… after ANY loss) used to be, “WE BEAT OURSELVES” because they were just not willing to admit they GOT BEAT?
Dalton Freeman had it going on in the postgame interview. It was something along the lines of “We didn’t get beat, we just didn’t play our kind of football.”
Uh huh. What kind of football is THAT, Dalton? Winning football?
YOU GOT BEAT. ADMIT IT. DEAL WITH IT.
Beat by a second string, haaha! Clemsux just sux starting with Dumbo Swinney, pig, pig!!!!!
I told you guys to bet everything you had on South Carolina. Pawn shops, cash advance loan, whatever.
I did – thanks!
Cha Ching!
I’m certain the entire world is eagerly anticipating the ACC championship game. Wow! The folks in Gainesville and Athens can’t wait to cheer on their little instate brothers.
Two teams that just got their asses whipped playing in a championship game. Hell, they’ll have to give out free beer just to get people to come.
Dalton Freeman, spinning it for the cameras and fans. Pulling out that lame, old, oft-used Clemson line, “We beat ourselves” one more time:
http://www.orangeandwhite.com/videos/detail/freeman-its-not-them-its-us/
where oh where are the tater fans tonight?
they searched the world over,
thought they found true win,
but it was a loss
and spit they were gone.
What you got to say now CSNDY, Jim Sweet, Amazing, voiceofreason, and the rest of the losers? Nothing, nada, nil, Zip. oh well. CU next year. Mighty powerful offense you had. Must be some sort of asterisk next to that loss. The bad thing is I guess they were right. Gamecocks must only have 1 “elite” win cause that proved Clemsux doesn’t ever deserve to be in the “elite” talks.
Well said. I kinda miss all my Agribuddies.
Oh they have a load of frank Howard…Danny ford…model t’s….and Great Depression history they will drop on us in a few days. Cyndy always reverts back to telling us how it used to be in the 50s.
Most of SC third down conversions were on penalties. A pass tipped up and when everyone went for it the referee calls a pass interference? OK build your statue to Spurrier. Maybe SC would have won anyway, but this tarnished it to say the least. If I remember correctly, SC left the ACC because of the same type of referee calls in basketball games with NC. Even though I attend SC, this game will forever be remembered as one with exceptionally bad officiating.
What do Clemson and Joe Wilson have in common? They both suck.
Whatever! We had 110 yards in penalties, Bob Marshall, that included an interception that was called back because of an incorrect interference call. True, the interference call you allude to wasn’t an interference. So what, one bad call on a drive that didn’t even produce points for us. in other words, take your orange glasses off and grow up!
What do Clemson and Joe Wilson have in common?
You use the Big L (for loser) in spelling their name!
Loser!
Sorry, Bob, but it reads just as lame here as it does over at The State’s site. Maybe try posting on a Tater site?
Did you read the post, I said they would have still probably won. I added that this is why Carolina left the ACC. Just pointing out a paradox.
S.Carolina left the ACC because it had enacted rules that were crimping our basketball recruiting under Frank McGuire, in particular. Clemson was supposed to come along but pussed out.
here is a typical crybaby clemsux fan. “Oh must have been unfair since we cant win”. Hello, there was 1 questionable interfernce call for both teams. the difference is the one VS USC was also interception that was over turned. both players have a right to go for the ball and both did. Odd how you forgot that one. good lord man, you are exactly what clemsux stands for. crybabies U. bye bye loser
Losers look to the past because the future and present is not so bright. When you play in a Pee Wee football league you will only get as good as you are challenged. It’s like playing the NCAA Football game on beginner.
Yep, you beat us 65 times but you lost today and you have been saying you beat us 65 times for the past four years. How’s that working out for you?
As for “we beat ourselves”, so if your competition didn’t show up you still would have lost? We can’t wait until next year so you can beat yourselves again.
We use to, we have been, etc. is passed tense. The future has pass you by.
SC owning Clemson is NORMAL. It’s how it shoudl be. Not surprised. SC is Men to Clemson’s Boys (See DJ Hit)….
Also: A lead for FITS: Since David Reaves (of questionable ethics) left USC, the Gamecocks are 4-0 vs Clemson.
Reaves (family friend of Brad Scott) was with USC for the Lou Holtz era and the first 4 years of Spurrier, when Spurrier was 1-3 vs Clemson. SC played inexplicably poorly to Clemson those years, even when winning…
Reaves was of very low moral character, and I heard an interview w/ one of Brad Scott’s sons (before a SC-CU game game) where he said a member of the USC staff had talked the USC gameplan with him. Reaves and the Scott boys all went to HS together (at SVHS) and are as THICK as Theives….
I think Clemson’s sucess under Bowden had a lot to do w/ Reaves feeding them our playbook and gameplan.
Remember: Brad Scott was reported to the NCAA for trying to bribe a USC GA (Leuers?) under Holtz. The GA was fired, eventully hired by Buddy Pough at SC St.
CNSYD made a video about this loss:

SEC Athletes win again over ACC Student Athletes. They will actually have to go to class next semester. Yes SEC Athletes you are supposed to go to class. It’s called college!
And all them “student athletes ” up at Moo U can go back to “studying” their playbooks, coloring books and their belly buttons while repeating the mantra “we beat ourselves ” (and the rest of the Tater Nation beats themselves (off) cause no self respecting woman would have them)
You’re right, Gamecocks will have to go to class since they aren’t getting schooled on the field like Clemson is.
hahaha keep posting you loser. FYI Miami, in the ACC, has a few players that are having someone read your comments to them as they can’t read themselves. If you actually knew anything you would know how funny, ridiculous, and unimportant your thoughts are. You might want to go back to class yourself to learn your logical argument fallacies to see why your comment is not even universally valid, and therefore not even true. I guess they don’t teach deductive reasoning at ITT Tech. Voiceofreason you are a very dumb person that pretends to be smart. Busted!! Go back to running your mouth and telling on people that pick on you. You really are like that smartass kid in English class that thinks they know everything and couldn’t handle it when the QB got a higher grade on the exam than them. What did they/you do? You proceed to try to put them down so that you appear smarter. It doesn’t work. You must have been stuffed in a locker or two in your day huh? I appreciate the daily laughs I get from your ignorant remarks. Thank you
That’s all you got. You mad boo?
This just in – Clowney has sacked Boyd (again)
Yes, BigT, my handle today is an homage to you, homie.
Fits: Your prediction was eerily prescient.
I. Hate. Football.
Tont0: I have LOTS of Immi-Taters. Many want ot have the cache i bring….It is Flattering…
And: Clemson is BENT over and REAMED AGAIN…they are Inferior to SC…and there ain’t a D$%n thing Dabo and the Idiot Taters can do about it…
Face it Taters…you are CHUMPS compared to the Gamecocks….Weak PUNKS and Wannabes…
How do you stop a Clemson fan from jerking off? Paint their pecker Garnet and Black and they won’t beat it for four years.
lol…
My spleen hurts! Good stuff, that.
OBD, I had a fellow come into my office last month with an orange pecker. I ran all the tests and even checked his bilirubin level for jaundice. All came back negative. I asked him a battery of questions to get a general profile and I was still stumped. So, I asked him what he did.
He said he was retired. And all he did all day long was watch porn movies and eat Cheetos. Go figure…
HAW! HAW! HAW! ………. oldie but still a goodie, and very appropriate today.. another HAW! HAW!
Pure strategy demonstrated what a great coach and staff we are so
fortunate to have.
Spurrier is a dream come true for the Cocks who show every indication of making a run for the national title in the future.
The depth of talent (current recruits included) bodes well for the Gamecocks.
Muted ESPN and listened to Todd Ellis and he certainly laid it on heavy. That’s big fun there.
It truly is a great day in South Carolina (if you’re a Gamecock).
Ron Morris – give it up, if that gallon of Jack Daniels didn’t make you feel better, then the Vodka is not going to either.
Todd Ellis, the announcer with the voice for newspaper.
And the face for radio…
Ellis does a GREAT job. He is ALWAYS an unapologetic, non-cliche broadcaster. FITS could learn from him. What Ellis lacks in schooling and polish, he MORE than makes up in Gamecock enthusiasm, and Clemson dislike.
Also: The ESPN broadcast Crew (whoever they were) became obviously upset when it became apparrant the Taters, they had @$$-Kissed all night long, (and who they pundit picked) would LOSE…
Hail to Todd Ellis. He’s refreshing as a Gamecock Voice.
The one post a month where I agree with T.
BigTurd, I especially love it when Turd Ellis gets excited and say, “… and he’s at the 40, 45, 50, 55 yard line.”
6-6 = Outback Bowl
10-2 = Outback Bowl
There he is, the guy who claims to know nothing about the rivalry and doesn’t take sides. That makes you almost as soft as Dabo.
Suck it, redneck.
Hey Brad:
BCS Bowl: Gives up 70 points to a Big East opponent…
Hahahahaha….
Just plain dumb, Brad. Soak your face in cold water a little while and see if you can come up with something better. But before you do, just realize that 5 in a row is a lock, so start planning for 2014.
Hey I’ve lived in the Columbia area for the past 20 years. I remember when USC went 6-6 and went to the Outback Bowl, people were acting like it was to play for the national championship. Now people are complaining about going to the same old Tier II bowl with a record of 10-2.
Will I go, nope, do I know where Clemson will go, nope and really don’t care. I know this comes to many here as a shock, because they only know that if you’re not a Gamehen fan, your a Tater.
6-6 gets you a shot at the ACC Championship…Tater Boy.
D Y L A N T H O M P S O N
C O N N O R S H A W
C O N N O R M I T C H !
Shuler Bentley?
just keep signing those defensive monsters and the rest will take care of itself.
Kitties are such bitter losers
Manhandled Pussy
Brad Scott’s sons went to Hammond.
They were/are THICK as Theives w/ the Character-dubious David Reaves…
And their Dad was caught trying to steal info. from a USC GA…
Check that @$$-HOLE…
Good Game!!!!
For all the hardworking, talented brothers and coaches, thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best quote on the game:
http://www.saturdaydownsouth.c…-in-60-seconds/
You have to tip your hat to Steve Spurrier. He beat Clemson with a backup quarterback, a backup running back and a point guard at wide receiver. Clemson just can’t beat South Carolina. The ACC is just stellar, right?
Compliments of ESPN
What did we learn in the ACC in Week 13? Glad you asked.
SEC > ACC. And it is not even close. It was a disastrous weekend for the ACC in its head-to-head matchups against the top conference in all the land, going 0-4 on a pitiful Saturday. You can call us USC.
You can call us Carolina.
We are THE University of South Carolina Fighting Gamecocks … and we own your lousy ass Dat Boy!
Here’s the new slogan for next years game……Fear The Thumb!
Just mark down next year’s game in the win column for Carolina. Nikki should stay home for that one…not welcome in WB.
Boyd had better hope he gets drafted this year, next year will be tougher, the players they lose to the draft and graduation, and possibly their offensive coach.
364 days of teeth knashing, lame excuses, impure thoughts.
The biggest Clemson worry is the opponent they face in the Chic Filet Bowl, if it either Texas A and M, Johnny Football puts up huge West Virginia like or LSU and Coach Myles gets to pin on the lockers that Clemson thinks it is the real Death Valley.
They could go into next season in such a spiral that a new AD may just ask for dabo to do the right thing and resign.
They open their season next year with Georgia coming in to collect a piece of that ass. Dabo gonna be tired of SEC.
Clemsux would have lost to Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, LSU, and of course USC if they played the teams SC played. Clemsux would have been 8 and 2 if they were lucky!
How about Clemson vs. Vandy in a bowl game with Vandy kicking their butt up and down the field?
And Vandy wins 35-7.
Or maybe Texas A&M.
Look out, bitter kitties!
I jus’ cane handle da troof! Jadaveon kicked my ass!
Clemson is the better team and every one in this country know it. Coots had refs in they’re pocket and cheats.
Lame excuse from the bitter kitties. Yeah, we had to let them penalize us and more than Clemsux and nullify a touchdown so it would look legit. And the only thing everyone in the country knows is that we kicked their ass again!
not one person in the world thinks Clemson is better after that. hahah you suck as bad as your tigers do there jim Sweet
Jim Sweet cannot be real, but he sounds a lot like the rest of these Clemson morons, and exactly like their radio broadcasters who cry like pussies in all games when the calls don’t go their way.
yabba dabba doodoo dabo dun lost 2 dem coot agin an agin an agin dat b 4 times. he sux
