IS THERE ANY DATA THAT NIKKI HALEY’S CABINET DIDN’T COUGH UP?
When S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley strode to the podium nearly a month ago to inform the public about an unprecedented state-level security breach, she said any number of things … none of which have turned out to be true.
Haley said nothing could have been done to stop the breach – which we now know was a lie. She also said that her cabinet used industry standard data security methods – another claim that was easily debunked.
Additionally, the first-term “Republican” claimed that no business information had been compromised – which also turned out to be false.
The latest revelation? According to Haley, in addition to 3.8 million Social Security numbers, nearly 400,000 credit and debit card numbers and tax information for more than 650,000 businesses – hackers also made off with 3.3 million bank account numbers.
According to a report from NBC investigative reporter Michael Isikoff, some of this data is already being sold on the black market.
Astounding, isn’t it? This thing just keeps getting worse …
Seriously … is there any data that Haley’s Department of Revenue (SCDOR) didn’t cough up?
Haley’s incompetence is inexcusable under any circumstances (remember, no other state in America has ever suffered an attack on this scale – not even dumb ass Mississippi). But the fact that this breach occurred less than six months after another major security lapse within her cabinet constitutes criminal negligence in our book.

Now this is classic- deflect the responsibility to the feds, then tell the Feds to impose more regulations that a state would be forecd to follow, all the while ignoring the fact that the breech occured in one of her own damn departments.

I think it’s just a knee-jerk reaction for a Republican to blame the Feds anytime something goes wrong, regardless of where the true blame lies.
I thought her attempt at deflection was almost Supremo when she said she was going to advise and enlighten her fellow Governors as to her findings and her alledged IRS shortcomings.

I’m no Nikki fan, but this presser was handled pretty well. She isn’t blaming the IRS. I think she places the blame where it belongs. She has stopped shooting from her sadly now substantial hips. She has a plan, it is being implemented and appears to be adequate.

Michael is not overseas until after the first of the year so he’s not protecting anything now except when he drives his hummer and gets a photo op for Haley, that’s his attempt to save his wife’s job.
My banker @ 1st Citz told me today that the bank would NO WAY guarantee the safety of my checking account and then tried to re-assure me with the “free credit monitoring”. Account closed.
I did the same. Asked bank about safety and they hemmed and hawed. I closed the account and moved banks. Did this at three different banks.
I’ve been just watching the news on this stuff, day by day. I even watched the WIS “info special” but it left me with more questions than answers.
I haven’t done the call in or online protection thing the state is offering. I have wondered if I should do the credit freeze thing; that is the only thing I have considered doing before finally deciding what to do, since we have been told we have until January and it’s retroactive “protection.”
I have thought of calling SC Dept. of Consumer Affairs and asking a bunch of questions because out of the entire universe of things you can do to protect yourself in every single corner of your financial picture, I think my wife and I are probably just going to have to bite the bullet and just get whatever the maximum coverage LifeLock has to offer. It seems the “package” the state is offering is so limited that it’s not worth doing.
Then I heard tonight on the news that the state now has a list of all whose info was compromised and they will be sending out letters and/or emails.
I kinda doubt if I will believe them if they tell me my info wasn’t compromised.
Probably should have done the LifeLock thing years ago, anyway.
We don’t do any online banking. I absolutely WILL NOT begin going online every day checking my and my wife’s accounts looking for the boogeyman unless I absolutely have to. I would rather pay LifeLock since you’re covered up to a million dollars with them from what I understand. We’re nowhere near being worth that; we could make good use of their cheapo policy if they had one. I’m sure they could “lock it down” before they got $250K out of us.

Here is the situation,
Life lock only protects you from individuals getting a new card or account in your name under your SSN. A thief can move all of your assets electronically with the account number and routing number from your bank. Given these were compromised, changing acct numbers should be easy enough to prevent this. I had also paid estimated taxes through SCDOR with a linked card to my bank account. Had that changed as well.
First Federal seems to offer good protection for free
SunTrust charges a small fee for protection
BOA -I am still figuring them out. They are getting hundreds of calls per day
Evidently, Etters was giving out bovine information such as nothing could have prevented this or they were using industry standard security methods.
I suggest all Directors, when appointed, to review all department procedures and equipment and never lie to your Governor.
SC needs new computers, new standards for what employees can do while online such as opening non-department emails, posting on blogs, bitching about the sports teams. Never while on the job!

And while they’re at it, they should be calling for Deputy Cooper to resign also. Haley blamed the IRS standards for this problem. The IRS has stated that they REQUIRE all information to be encrypted. It seems that Deputy Cooper, an ex-IRS employee, gave her the wrong information again.
The DOR gets all kinds of information from the IRS who requires them to be in compliance with their rules. Did the DOR (Cooper)assure the IRS they were in compliance?
Haley better not get into a pissing contest with the IRS, because she will be in the contest unarmed (with Cooper).

Computers, hacking, encryption..scary words that seem to legitimize the powerlessness of the state government to protect data. As most posters on this page know, common sense is the missing ingredient in the government’s arsenal. Case in point: the South Carolina Employment Security Commission, (aka the employment office, or lack thereof), recently sent me several notices in the U.S. mail with my social security number prominently displayed on the header, next to my name. Duh!

We should just accept it. This state is doomed. It goes beyond mere human incompetence. God simply hates this place and makes no allowances for it. Between SCDOR, SCSU, the Lexington Ring, Nikki, the state legislature, and LMC there is no hope of redemption. Just give up.
You know, there are a WHOLE lot more questions that should be asked concerning the incompetency at DOR.
For one — how in the world did a phishing email even make it through their server? Do they not have filters?? The state agency I worked for before I retired had already put into place very STRONG filters to take out any kind of spam or phishing emails. I can’t get over that kind of incompetency or lax security there.
Another thing: the person(s) who clicked on the link in the phishing email had security clearance to work in the files, yet did not KNOW to NOT click on that link? Even I know better than to do that. What kind of people do we have working at DOR?

The security person for the our business just told us that the new thing is what they call spear fishing. The hacker pulls up your face book or other social media page and identifies friends. They then go to your friends face book page and copy photos or other things from that page. They then send you an email that appears to be from your friend with pictures of your friend. If you accept that email, they send you a second email with the malware.
Success rate is much higher as it gets through most filters and appears personal.
People, if you put it on your tax return, it’s fucking stolen. All of that information is stolen. Every last bit. So yes, bank accounts that you had your returns direct deposited into? Fucking stolen.
Probably would be a good idea to create a new checking account, move everything over to the new one (direct deposited pay, automatic billing, subscriptions, everything), wait two months to make sure nothing is pinging your old account, and just close it.
And next time, have them mail you the goddamn check. You don’t have a choice in giving them your SSN, but for fucks sake, don’t give them any more than you have to. Wait a few days for the check to come in the mail. It sucks, but SCDoR sucks worse.

Telling someone who knows they listed their bank account information or credit card number on a South Carolina tax return NOT to change accounts is about the stupidest advice I’ve seen yet. If you don’t change your account numbers the crooks can get (and keep) your money and then the cost of the fraud will get shared among the bank’s customers and shareholders via higher fees/lower dividends. Change those accounts without delay!
DO NOT WORRY! Next week we will be notified by the governor’s office that we will privileged to hear that Haley-Version 1.5 will be released to the public.

I think data is both plural and singular. I think the question is grammatically correct.
“Datum” is singular. “Data” is plural. “Bacterium” is singular. “Bacteria” is plural. “You” can be both singular or plural, in its usage. Nothing can be both singular and plural, because that would defeat the purpose of the differentiation. Misuse of words by otherwise intelligent people causes other otherwise intelligent people to consider the misuse to be grammatically correct.
I heard the presser yesterday. She was talking about old equipment and outdated software. I wonder just how many times the agencies requested more money in their budgets and got it denied. Haley’s agencies probably didn’t request it because she told them not to. All these people against taxes got just what they asked for. I wish it would be the tea party people that get hacked if anyone does. I spoke with one IT director a few years ago and the director said there was software available to them with little cost but that there was no money for staff to implement and monitor the software.
No Governor in any state’s history have overseen so much harm to his or her people than Governor Nikki Haley. It is what happens when people get all fired up about elected the least knowledgeable person for the job.
Blaming Hailey for the breech is simply stupid. Her lack of candor and timeliness is one thing, but like the President, there are many facets to the government that the person in charge doesn’t directly oversee. It’s not Hailey’s job to ensure the proper encryption is being used for SCDOR records. It’s her job to fix things like this when they come to light.
You can not like her all you want, but blaming her for the security breach is not productive nor prudent.
