SHOULD WE STAY OR SHOULD WE GO?
A new petition movement has formed urging South Carolinians to secede from the United States of America and pursue their destiny as an independent people in the wake of U.S. President Barack Obama’s reelection.
Obviously the Obama administration is prepared for such an eventuality, but that’s not stopping a few folks from getting organized anyway. In fact a petition has been posted to the White House website urging the Palmetto State to “absolve its allegiance to the Union and declare its independence as sovereign nation state.”
So far, more than 13,000 people have signed the petition since it was created three days ago … and similar petitions for other states are also making the rounds.
What do we think of secession? Well, we’re not wild about the electoral knee-jerk nature of this particular movement, but we’re not unilaterally opposed to the idea either …
“We’ve contemplated the notion of South Carolina seceding from the union again … although this time it wouldn’t be to enslave black South Carolinians (our current failed status quo has got that covered), it would be to provide all South Carolinians with the sort of opportunity their local, state and federal leaders seem hellbent on depriving them of,” we wrote back in December 2010.
Here’s the thing, though … secession has to be the beginning of a plan, it can’t be the plan itself. Such a decision would have to be accompanied by a pair of other critical moves.
First, secession would have to be accompanied by the complete dissolution of South Carolina’s infinitely corrupt state government (and its banana republic municipalities, too). Second, a new form of government replacing these rotten edifices would have to be drawn up. This is especially critical given South Carolina’s status as one of the most backward, underperforming states in America – as well as the racial stigma that lingers from its prior attempt to secede.
So far, we’ve seen nothing to suggest that the people pushing secession have thought any of this through.
They’re just mad Mitt Romney lost … which is not a good enough reason for a state to secede. In fact when you think about it the fundamental case for South Carolinians pursuing their own destiny would have been every bit as compelling had former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney been elected president last week – which is something that most of these secession “hawks” don’t understand.
See it’s not just Democrats in Washington, D.C. who are printing money and suffocating liberty … Republicans are almost as bad (and infinitely more hypocritical) on both counts.
Aside from these considerations, South Carolina must also take into account the federal government’s likely response to its declaration – and be willing to die for the new form of government that they’ve laid out for themselves. In other words they had better recognize that their actions could plunge the state into a perpetual dystopia like the one portrayed in The Hunger Games – although let’s face it, take away the “circus” and that’s pretty much where most of rural South Carolina is already.
Still … we believe that secession, within the proper context, is a discussion worth having. We just don’t think it can – or should – be discussed as a response to Obama’s reelection. Like we said … Romney was every bit as bad as Obama, which is why thousands of liberty lovers like this website’s founding editor supported someone else (twice).

and that is exactly why secession is not a viable option for the success of this state. The power hungry machinations of the Nikki Haleys and Glenn McConnells of this state would be “all in” to encapsulate their power in a new independent banana republic. To quote good ole Mel Gibson, “why should I trade one tyrant 3000 miles away for 3000 tyrants one mile away.”

On 20 March 1861, United States Senator James A. Bayard of Delaware began a three day speech on the prospects of war and the legality of secession. He began by offering a resolution in the hope of avoiding what he predicted would be a long, bloody conflict. It read:
Resolved by the Senate of the United States, That the President, with the advice and consent of the Senate, has full power and authority to accept the declaration of the seceding States that they constitute hereafter an alien people, and to negotiate and conclude a treaty with “the Confederate States of America” acknowledging their independence as a separate nation; and that humanity and the principle avowed in the Declaration of Independence that the only just hosts of government is “the consent of the governed,” alike require that the otherwise inevitable alternative of civil war, with all its evils and devastation, should be thus avoided.
Today, November 15, is Bayard’s birthday. His is one of the most important but forgotten United States Senators in American history. There are no monuments to his honor, no buildings named after him, and outside of Delaware hardly anyone has heard his name, but he was one of the few men in the Congress with the resolve to resist the headlong rush to war the Lincoln administration and the Republican Party foisted on the American people, North and South. He privately called Lincoln an “ordinary Western man” that had no concept about American government. Bayard was a rock, a crusader waging what seemed to be, at times, a one-man defense of the Constitution and the Union of the Founders. He was threatened by mob violence, his mail was searched and was later confiscated, he was denounced in the press as a traitor, was hung in effigy in Philadelphia, and later resigned from the Senate rather than continue among the “reptiles” in Congress as he called them. Such a man deserves our attention.
Bayard openly questioned the motivation behind the war against the South and wondered aloud how people could defend such a cause. “Could there be a more revolting proposition than that the individual man, who is domiciled in the State, and residing there, shall be held in the position that he is guilty of treason against the State if he does not side with her, and of treason against the General Government if he does?” He contended “humanity alone” must side with the “law of domicile” in such a situation. When his son-in-law joined the Union army in 1861, Bayard warned, “In embarking on this war therefore, you enlist in a war for invasion of another people. If successful it will devastate if not exterminate the Southern people and this is miscalled Union. If unsuccessful then peaceful separation must be the result after myriads of lives have been sacrificed, thousands of homes made desolate, and property depreciated to an incalculable extent. Why in the name of humanity can we not let those States go?”
In a July 1861 speech entitled “Executive Usurpation,” Bayard roasted the Lincoln administration and lamented the loss of liberty. The Constitution “which we had supposed gave us, as citizens of a free country, free institutions, in contradiction to the absolutism which reigned in France” was being subverted by an administration that smacked of Louis XIV, Oliver Cromwell, or Napoleon Bonaparte. Personal liberty was the cost of centralization. “If [you cherish] the principle of civil liberty, [you] cannot sustain this action of the President [suspension of habeas corpus] which violates the laws of the land, and abolishes all security for personal liberty to every citizen throughout…the loyal States….power always tends to corruption, and especially when concentrated in a single person.”
Bayard typically reserved his harshest statements for the Republican leaders in Congress. He wrote in late 1861 that, “Their intent is the devastation and obliteration of the Southern people as the means of retaining power, and yet I doubt in the history of the world has ever, with the exception of the French reign of terror, shown so imbecile, so corrupt, so vindictive rulers over any people as those with which this country is now cursed.” He voted against appropriating money for the war effort, was dismayed by the reckless government spending – “God help the tax-payers if the money can be borrowed” – urged his son to buy gold when the National Bank Acts passed, thundered against their attempts to expel members of Congress for their opposition to the War, denounced troops at the polls, the military occupation of Delaware, and the arrest of dozens of Delawareans for suspected disloyalty, and believed that the “more moderate” Republicans were being “governed by the violent and ignorant.” He wrote, “If the people of the U.S. were not more practical and informed than the element the French Jacobins dealt with I believe we should have the atrocities of the ‘Mountain’ renewed. Fear alone sustains them.” In 1862 he wrote, “State necessity has always been pleaded for the suppression of liberty.”
Recent events, of course, make Bayard relevant. Tomorrow, thousands of Americans will flock to see Stephen Spielberg’s new film about “Honest Abe,” and will doubtless leave feeling a surge in admiration for the “Great Emancipator.” Assuredly, Bayard’s description of events will not make the film. At the same time all fifty States and over 675,000 people and counting have petitioned the White House to accept the peaceful separation of their State from the Union. Barack Obama has compared his administration to Lincoln’s. Perhaps the two have more in common than he realizes.
Lincoln, the dishonest, Hamiltonian, dictator, and Obama, the Marxist, Keynesian, emperor, both have shredded the Constitution and both have faced a decision on how to handle open defiance of their administration. Obama’s will mirror Lincoln’s, at least in regard to the legality of secession. Secession, he will say, is illegal, unconstitutional, treasonous, and unpatriotic. And why not, he has so-called conservative support. Bayard said in 1861 that “I believe the great value of the American Union…is the preservation of liberty – by which I mean a Government of laws, securing the right of free speech, securing the freedom of thought, and securing the free and ample discussion of any question.” The American people may not be ready for secession and are going about it the wrong way, but let’s hope there is a James Bayard in the current crop of United States Senators, someone with the manly resolve to contest the flimsy arguments that will certainly be used against the American principles of independence and self-determination. I don’t have much optimism.

Sadly, no. It seems the reactionaries are out and about.
There is, however, another petition on the WhiteHouse.gov site, one that I happily signed.
That petition asks that anyone who signs the secession petitions be stripped of their citizenship and all benefits.
A review of the S.C. (and several of the petitions of other states) finds that the same people are signing all of them, even if they are non-residents of the particular states.
Why would you think its a joke Bonhoeffer. I’d have to agree with much of what the article states.
I don’t know that the reason is Obutthead got elected, but clearly this country is going into the toilet. Consider these points for a moment.
1. We would agree to allow US military personnell on our soverign soild for defense. In return, we will gladly place a 10% flat tax on every citizen for the payment of protection from the world. Japan pays 0. Germany pays 0. Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Isreal, Afgahnistan, Iraq, Turkey. All pay 0. I have no doubt there are other bases as well. Frankly and matter of factly, we pay rental space in each and everyone of these countries.
2. We dump the current constitution of SC and repeal it back 60 years. (yeah yeah, no one wants to make you a slave. get over yourselves). 60 years worth of libtard legislation gone with the stroke of a pen. The new constitution has 3 lines. A) If it is not expressly perimitted to the government, it is expressly the right of the citizen. B) The government must operate via a flat 10% tax from the earnings of individuals. C) The government may only make laws via constitutional amendment. Any amendments must be passed by an 80% head count vote. No delegates, regions or representative systems may be set up for this process.
3. SSA, WIC, Welfare, Medicare, DOEng, DOEdu, DOdumbshitand everyotherbsbureauofbureaucrats gone with the stroke of a pen. 99% of the current state budget.
4. We will gladly open our borders to US Citizens to come spend there money here. They are subject to the same laws and rights as they have in the US.

In the current state of these United States, soverignty has no downside.

Mike’s loophole is genius, though. In fact, it may be better than our current arrangement, as foreign aid usually ends up being taken by the politically connected people thanks to the corrupt government that receives it. Easier to funnel money into their own pockets, and less repercussions from the government giving them the funds.

I’m not saying a significant majority of people here haven’t learned the lesson from the civil war of trying to “leave” or prevent the Feds from doing whatever they like….but it only takes a stupid minority to kick off another ass kicking by the Feds.
Martin Luther had it right when it comes to peaceful resistance, but I don’t think in practical terms it can be successfully pulled off because there’s always a small minority of mentally unstable idiots that kick off violence….even further if the Feds get pissed enough they’ll just send in agent provocateurs to kick things off, which the CIA is very good at globally already.
There really isn’t much hope of secession short of a dollar collapse which changes the whole paradigm if not managed properly(and quickly) by the Feds.

I was thinking more along the line that if we seceded from the US, they would in turn pull their military bases out of SC and relocate them to remaining US states. This would really impact our economy and employment numbers.

“Among those states with large numbers of petitioners asking out: Louisiana (more than 28,000 signatures at midday Tuesday), which gets about $1.45 in federal largess for every $1 it pays in taxes; Alabama (more than 20,000 signatures), which takes $1.71 for every $1 it puts in; South Carolina (26,000), which takes $1.38 for its dollar; and Missouri (22,000), which takes $1.29 for its dollar.”
First of all, South Carolinians would have to figure out how to run a state. We haven’t done such a good job. Remember James L. Petigru’s famous remark: “South Carolina is too small for a republic and too large for an insane asylum.” What’s changed? Maybe we could call back Gov. Appalachian Trail? He certainly covered himself with glory. Perhaps the current governor could become president of the Republic of South Carolina? She could then appoint her daughter as Secretary of Commerce. After all, her daughter has retail experience. Her husband, the overweight part-time military impersonator, could become Chief of Staff of the South Carolina Army. I rest easy in my bed with just the thought.
There are so many options, my head swims. But the key question: Who is going to make up the $.38 on the dollar revenue shortfall from the U.S. government? I guess we’ll just forfeit the cash, cut the government to the bone, and go back to planting cotton. That Sea Island cotton was the best in the world.

Why does the whole state have to secede. Maybe we can do it county by county or city by city. That way the cities and counties where people want to be citizen of the US can remain South Carolina and all those folks who want to live in a third world country can form their own nation under the leadership of General Haley.

I think this secession talk is silly. That ship passed a long time ago, and it would take something dramatic for the benefits of secession to outweigh its costs in the present day.
But 1st Amendment was enacted so that we can discuss these things without fear of prosecution, unless the talk is a violent overthrow of the government.
And there is nothing treasonous about discussion an overthrow or withdrawal from a tyranny. The tyrant(s) may think it’s treasonous, but for the people (whom the government is supposed to serve) it’s patriotic. When the government no longer serves the will of the people, that government loses its right to govern. As Jefferson said: “when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce [the people] under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security.”

1. Oil = NONE
2. Natural Gas = Little to NONE
3. Coal: = NONE
4. Gold: = A little
5. Other mining/strategic resources (tin,copper,etc): Little to NONE

Then, you’ve got to figure out how much you want to spend defending this state (Don’t count on me being part of the militia; I’m planning on being an insurgent; after 25 years serving Uncle Sam, damned if I’m going to serve some tinpot govenor like Queen Namrata and double for the likes of “Shirker” Sanford). Hell, it might be kinda fun being on the other side of the fence for one time – but in all likihood, I’ll head for a state with better sense.
Anyhow, a standing military will be necessary including coastal and air defense. Will a few Boston Whalers suffice or would South Carolina have to contract with Bath Boat works in Maine – that would be a hoot!!- Of couse there is a sizeable fleet of high speed fishing charter boats- would SC sieze them for coastal defense?? Secession is not the answer, succession is. We just have to hunker down and endure whatever the next four years brings us, and then elect a successor who will work to repair the damage.
Although I am fully in favour of SC or any other state divorcing Washington, DC– call it secession or whatever you like– it will not come about by petitioning the president or any other direct method. At least not now, although that could change in more dire circumstances.
What is more likely (probable) is that we will be forced to go it alone (or in league with other states) when Washington self-destructs.
I there is no reason for not preparing for this scenario any more than for storing food and other necessities in case of emergency, whether natural or man made. What if we HAD TO? How would/could it be done?
Certainly the feasibility of the current state representatives being capable of leading a free SC is a stretch.
They get a large percentage of their revenue and mandates (funded and unfunded) from Washington and are quite content (most of them anyway) with the status quo. The money and all the strings that go with it, however, will eventually reach a point where one or both of the parties can no longer afford the relationship as it currently exists.
The most likely scenario is the collapse of the dollar which would de-facto end the USA as an all-powerful unitary nation-state just as as it did in the USSR. (Remember them?)
In such a case, an open port and truly free market could create opportunities not possible under the current regime/political paradigm.
This secession this is a wake-up call at best, the death throes of the union at worst. Whatever the case, I look forward to seeing it play out.

Born in Michigan and having lived in SoCal and Ohio for some time, a stint in Charlotte for a couple of years and finally in SC (both rural and urban) I can tell you that if you are determined to find happiness you can do so just about anywhere.
I love the South and the people of the South in general. The history of the South happens to lean toward my viewpoints surrounding politics/gov’t- but the reality is that the South is a diverse place and the people that reside here have DIVERSE viewpoints.
There is also the reality of SC being behind the curve economically compared to other areas of the country(and as a result behind in other ways). Personally I attribute much of that problem to the lingering effects of the punitive unCivil War, SC is still suffering from the effects 150 years later and playing “catchup”.
Anyway, my whole point is that I have found happiness here and I could find it any place when I set my mind to it. I am not blinded by SC’s problems but choose to focus on its positives in terms of how I live my life and appreciate what it has to offer when living my life(and not commenting on politics here)>

Our gutless leaders would never give secession due consideration, but it may not be as nutty as some of you seem to think. That our economy and our dollar is going to take a huge dump sometime in the not-so-distant future is a given. There is just no way around either hyperinflation or a total depression. It will be so much uglier than the one back in 1929 when it happens.
If we were to secede and form alliances with other states, perhaps creating our own monetary system, perhaps even going on the gold standard, is it not possible that we could sidestep much of the misery, pain, and gnashing of teeth the United States is going to suffer through when the dollar falls?
I am no expert on economics, but does this not at least sound a little reasonable and worthy of consideration?
If it were to be done peacefully, as all petitions are suggesting, we would hopefully retain diplomatic ties with the US and trade, travel, or other connections would remain. There would necessarily be adjustments to be made for differing monetary units and all but we would need to ensure that we maintained a very independent and strong monetary system.

Nope – the whole idea of supporting South Carolina and others to leave would be to get you off the government dole. So there would be no retention of trade or any economic ties with you all. We’d simply watch you experiment with your no-taxes, no-government views while your schools worsen and your infrastructure crumbles. The U.S. would have a bit of a problem with folks attempting to cross the border in order to flee this new confederacy. But with the absence of so many red states, the U.S. would have a generous amnesty program to allow these folks back in.

Giving it further thought, getting back into the US would not be a problem for border states that seceded. Just get some brown shoe polish, sew or strap tennis shoes to your knees and walk on your knees being careful to keep at an angle where your feet against your buttocks are not visible, and you will look like an illegal Mexican. They will welcome you with open arms.
As for the schools and other institutions, they might function more efficiently if not saddled with tons of unnecessary Federal regulations and guidelines.
From what I understand, that is the route Scotland is taking in pulling itself away from the UK. A lot of right-wingers get a boner bringing up how Scotland is handling this possibility.

Not a single colony succeeded. All the descendents assimilated into the host country and all speak Spainish or Portugese as their native tongue.

I surprised that the Chinese are allowing the remake of “Red Dawn” to be distributed to the theaters.
I think it’s coming out this weekend.

“Gettysburg” was a good flick. Old Ted made a good movie and I thought it was pretty powerful. Too bad it didn’t do better at the box office.
I have it & “Gods & Generals” on dual DVD but “Gods” has too much talking in it. The movies were taken for the Shara’s (father & son) books
The Shara’s are the best at -semi-historical fiction around. I’m a big fan of their line of books. The father wrote “Killer Angels” and after he died, his son took over.
I read every one I could find while I was in the “Sandbox”

You might have heard stories this past week about states that are petitioning the President for permission to secede from The Union. The Union, being The United States of America. But this actually is just sloppy reporting by the main stream media.
First of all, what are being filed are petitions on the White House’s website by groups of citizens. In order for the President to review them, or do whatever it is he does with them, they have to get a certain number of signatories. These are not, I repeat, NOT, petitions by the actual States themselves. Anyonereporting otherwise is simply wrong.
Second of all, it is a pointless exercise because States do not need to petition the federal government, much less the messiah, to secede. They simply say, “We’re seceding.” Then they secede.
See, the Constitution spells out the powers of our federal government. It also clearly states that, “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” That would be in Amendment Ten.
