TIGER FANS SUGGEST ROLLING TAILBACK’S WHEELCHAIR DOWN DEATH VALLEY’S HILL … AND LETTING GO
Clemson University head football coach Dabo Swinney showed uncharacteristic class and eloquence in responding to the horrific injury suffered last month by University of South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore.
“This is a guy that to me represents all the good things that college football should be about,” Swinney said, adding that Lattimore was “a winner in every regard.”
Good for Swinney … it’s just a shame that more of the Tiger faithful don’t feel the same way.
In a recent thread posted on the website Tigernet.com, Clemson fans engaged in a debate over how to “properly honor Marcus Latimore” (yup, they misspelled his last name).
“I say the Tigers score 21 points in every quarter of our game on November 24 2012,” one fan recommends. “In a humble way, it would show our full respect.”
That’s actually pretty funny … in fact it’s damn near hilarious given that Clemson hasn’t scored 21 points in a whole game against South Carolina since 2008. But still … comments like that are good clean fun. And perfectly acceptable smack talk.
The next suggestions weren’t quite so humorous, though, as one Tiger fan said that Clemson fans should “push (Lattimore’s) wheelchair down the hill.”
“I hope whoever is pushin forgets to hold on … oops!” the next commenter adds.
“Ouch hahah that’s not funny,” another writes, quickly adding that they “just laughed out loud.”

Lattimore – USC’s career scoring leader – suffered a dislocated right knee and multiple torn ligaments during South Carolina’s win over Tennessee on October 27. The gruesome injury reminded many of the career-ending broken leg sustained by former Washington Redskins’ quarterback Joe Theismann in 1985 – and there was some initial concern that Lattimore may have suffered career-ending arterial damage to his leg.
Fortunately, Lattimore was able to undergo surgery on his knee and doctors are optimistic that he can return to the football field in 2014. That’s great news for a great football player – but an even better human being.
Obviously we don’t think these fans speak for all Clemson supporters (in fact our guess is that they represent an especially uncouth minority), however there’s no denying that remarks like these are great bulletin board material for Gamecock headhunters like Jadeveon Clowney, Devin Taylor and D.J. Swearinger.
UPDATE: Apparently we’ve been accused on (by?) Tigernet of manufacturing this story. You have a different memory of the fight at Death Valley than what I do. Late in the 4th quarter after a play was over a Clemson player tried to rough up Syvelle Newton after he threw the football, had him on the ground and proceeded to try and shove his helmet into the ground. At that moment a USC offensive lineman came to his rescue and that’s when a whole bunch of pushing and shoving escalated into an all out brawl. Many will argue that it started before the game at the bottom of the hill. That’s BS. It’s a rivalry and there’s going to be taunting going on before a game. Not to mention that happened over 2 hours prior.

One fan wants to post how many points Florida beat USC by. He must not know much about that game. Turnovers inside the 5 yard line lead to some very easy scores for UF. UF only had 183 yards of total offense so the score was very misleading. The one decent team Clemson has played this year put up almost half a mile in offense. Clemson is good but not as good as they’ve looked against vastly inferior competition

I looked up the official box score on the UF-USCe game. There are no asterisks to indicate that TDs that resulted from TOs are worth less than any other TDs. Is UF to blame for USCe turning the ball over deep in their own territory? Should UF have backed up the ball so they would not be so close to the goal line when they took over?
There is no asterick on Clemson’s score against Maryland either, but perhaps there should be one indicating a linebacker turned QB was able to score on Clemson. EVERYBODY has scored on Clemson, more than once.

USC’s injured player received LOTS of media attention, and coverage and all the praise was really over the top. Sure he is a good football player who also has demonstrated a good attitude and sportsmanship in the past, but the roster is full of kids like that. At the level of USC or Clemson a kid who is not like that should actually be the exception.

USC reunited a military man with his family on field a few weeks ago. We wear those damn ugly unis as part of the Wounded Warrior project. We have a military appreciation game, just as I am sure they do at Clemson.
