SOMEBODY  NEEDS TO GO “ALL IN” FOR THE TRUTH

We’re not going to get into the weeds regarding the affair between former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director David Petraeus and his biographer, Paula Broadwell.

Sure, it is absolutely staggering that the CIA, U.S. Department of Justice (USDOJ) and the White House all played such a ridiculous pre-election “kabuki dance” with this information (and that the House “Republican” leadership chose to sit on it), but whatever … Petraeus didn’t get fired because he was a married man banging his married biographer.

And as much as we’re tempted to make the requisite penile-vaginal jokes regarding the “All In” title of Broadwell’s book … that’s just too easy.

This is about Benghazi, baby … the terrorist attack that killed four Americans (including a U.S. Ambassador) in Libya on September 11.  It’s also about the cover-up that should have been an explosive scandal for the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama – but wasn’t.

Naturally, this website opposes American intervention in Libya.  In fact we generally oppose foreign aid and American intervention anywhere – and can’t stand the neocons who continue to promote such unnecessary (and expensive) engagements.

And when neocons like U.S. Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham warn us that “they will follow us home” – whoever “they” are – we have a pretty simple answer.

“Let them fucking come.”

They’ll find a damn fist full of steel waiting for them at this house … whoever they are.

Anyway … after failing to secure its overseas embassies and allegedly telling CIA forces to “stand down” during the September 11 attack in Benghazi, the Obama administration also failed to come clean regarding what it knew about the assault.  In fact Obama (twice), White House spokesman Jay Carney, U.N. ambassador Susan Rice and Petraeus himself all told the public that the attack in Benghazi was some random spontaneous offshoot of an otherwise peaceful protest.

That’s clearly false … and at this point it’s also pretty clear that the CIA knew it was false from the very beginning.

In fact there is literally no component of this drama – from the initial assault to the Petraeus debacle – in which people have been given a straight answer.

That’s why Benghazi is more than just the latest reminder of America’s diminished place in the world … its the latest reminder of our government’s diminished capacity for telling the truth.  And more than that, it’s the latest reminder of the mainstream media’s diminished capacity for holding government accountable for its actions.

UPDATE: Yeah … thankfully after that depressing last graph there is SOMETHING funny to write about related to this whole mess.

Okay, just as long as we understand that the media covering for government is not just when Democrats occupy the White House. It happens all them time. I don’t pretend to know all the reasons for it but I know it happens all the time, Democrat or Republican POTUS. The shit Bush/Cheney/Rummy got away with is now legendary.

We tried ignoring “them” and what did “they” get? Have we even killed as many of them as they us when you add our military deaths to the 9/11/01 murders? And they are still trying to “come” (apparently they decided to take you up on your invitation). Sticking our heads in the sand doesn’t work. Obama is trying that strategy now, reducing our military strength and capability while letting our potential enemies build up without a US response. The “peace dividend” was for our potential enemies, they armed up while we scaled back, now we are doing it again. We will regret this foolish game of “leave them alone and they will leave us alone”.

No the problem is we won’t let the military do their job, the way they were trained to do it. They have to be the world’s police and babysitters. We have the finest military force the world has ever seen and they have to be nice . Forget that. Bring them home, cut off all foreign aid, and let the world know that the next time someone messes with us we will wipe them off of the face of the earth. Then we would have to actually do it. Something Obama won’t do and something Bush didn’t do either. Its all a game and our men and women are just the pawns.

Hey Fits, here’s your first clue on how Benghazi became a scandal.
The FBI agent “acquaintance” of Mrs. Kelly started the investigation
of the harassing emails at her request. This is WITH HER knowing he has
the hots for her because he had sent her the shirtless pic.

When he realized it was over his pay grade, he properly bumped it upstairs to the appropriate FBI divisions, but stayed in the loop
of the investigation. Those senior investigators soon realized he was
hot for her and obsessed with the details on the investigation so they shut him out.

He took this very badly and came to believe that they cut him out because the were covering for the President before the election.
He communicated this theory to Eric Cantor, who we all know is as non-partison as they come and would never use an unsubstantiated
bit of gossip theory for political purposes.

My favorite Josh Marshall quote:

So basically this entire scandal both at the outset and in the denouement was driven by Freakshow FBI Agent X who both wanted to bed the victim of the alleged harassment and also decided that the FBI was covering up it’s investigation of the Tampa socialite to protect President Obama. And this because of his “worldview”. Please let us meet this awesome example of American law enforcement.

Ahhh, the old “kill the messenger” strategy. No, the scandal has little to do with some unnamed FBI agent who wants to bang some Tampa ‘tang. It has to do with the actual stupid decision made by a CIA Director to put himself into a compromised position, what he actually did or didn’t do, and how the investigation was handled (minus Agent X). Even Panetta is implying the FBI screwed up by not looping in the congressional intelligence committees.

Don’t you think the firing had more to do with his leaking classified intelligence information to members of the Romney campaign than it did the affair?

Jan November 13, 2012 at 1:45 pm

Sid, are you a journalist? I received my Journalism Degree from the Fox School of Journalism, and I know how journalism works. You take facts (like Petraeus resigns after affair revealed), and assign to those facts a series of speculations of things that may have led to the existence of those facts. You then select your favorite speculation and present that to the public, as the theory of what is going on.

Networks following this time tested model are the most profitable. Think of all the time and money saved from by not waisting time on investigation and fact checking or even sources. You can now respond quickly to all events.

Reply
sid November 13, 2012 at 1:58 pm

Sooo, it was a joke? I don’t get it. A joke of this nature is supposed to have at least a tenuous link to reality, but this does not appear to qualify.

Nonetheless, I do get that you don’t like Fox. That’s the favorite foil of leftists like yourself, while the right goes after the rest of the mainstream media with similar allegations of bias-driven reporting.

I just thoght you had something of actual substance to offer, but I guess I should have known better, based on your history. Sorry for the confusion.

As for your query, no, I am not currently a journalist, but I have worked as one.

Jan November 13, 2012 at 2:09 pm

Sid, it makes as much sense as the speculation by Fits and Fox, and has as much a link to reality as the speculation by Fits and Fox.

Reply
sid November 13, 2012 at 2:49 pm

Maybe there’s nothing more here than what has been revealed, but the timing is certainly curious. FBI says it spoke to Broadwell in Sept., when she admitted the affair, and Petraeus at least two weeks before the election, and he admitted the affair, but nothing comes to light until after the election? That seems rather odd.

Reply
Jan November 13, 2012 at 3:49 pm

Ok, lets review the known facts. Petraeus is a Republican. The affair occured. FBI says it did not alert the President. FBI did not alert Democrats on intelligence committee. FBI did tell Eric Cantor before the election. Eric Cantor did not release the information to the public, even though it was not classified.

What speculations can we apply to those facts. Cantor must be hiding something. It must have been bad for the Republicans or he would have released the information. Petraeus is a Republican and wanted Romney to win. My speculation seems as valid as Fox’s or Fits’ speculation. Right?

sid November 13, 2012 at 4:01 pm

Only in the tortured mind of a leftist, who will twist reality into shapes previously unknown in nature in order to make some sort of jab at Republicans, Fox, or a website you don’t seem to like in any way, but spend a lot of time visiting and posting comments.

If you actually think the White House didn’t know about the investigation/scandal until after the election…well, that’s just cute. You are a loyal Obamabot, I will give you that.

Reply
Jan November 13, 2012 at 4:27 pm

How much twisting do you have to do to reach a conclusion that Petraeus’ resignation over an affair is somehow related to Benghazi when you have absolutely no evidence linking the two and the speculation the two are related does not even make common sense.

I guess it does make sense in the deranged minds of wing nuts, angry the public did not buy the Benghazi scandal they have been trying create over the past two weeks, and now everything somehow relates to this alternate reality they have created in their own mind, with no evidence; Because … well it just has to relate somehow. We cannot have been wrong about everything.

Reply
Jackson McPhee November 13, 2012 at 6:01 pm

I find that the more highly suspect thing about the timing of this to be the fact that Petraeus was in Libya in late October conducting an inspection, study, and evaluation of the situation there, and now (even though he CAN be subpoenaed), he has said he doesn’t plan to testify before the committee investigating Benghazi.

He hasn’t filed his report yet, either. And all this was kept undercover until after the election. Connect all those dots and as a famous SNL character once said, “How convenient!!!”

Stay tuned, people. This is all going to be a very bumpy ride for the Obama administration.

Sid, I’m not joking. I’m creating an alternate reality scandal that involves Petraeus, Cantor, and Romney.

I don’t hate Republicans at all. I don’t actually hate anyone. I am not even that fond of Obama. I do believe the current Republican party has become dominated by far right zealots who are unreasonable and out of touch, and do not even resemble the Republican Party of 20 years ago. I do believe Bush was a disaster as a President.

I believe there is no such thing as Fox “News”. Fox has become nothing more than a constantly running editorial and part of the the burgeoning infotainment industry. They no longer feel the need to even base their commentary on provable facts or to even investigate their allegations. They are nothing more than an constantly running attack ad by the GOP.

Jackson McPhee November 13, 2012 at 6:33 pm

Jan, when is the last time you watched an appreciable amount of Fox’s News programs?

I understand if you haven’t watched The O’Reilly Factor, Hannity, etc., but how about Shep Smith’s show?

Try watching it sometime. Give Greta Van Susteren’s show a look, too. I think you might be forming your opinion based on less than complete info.

Jan November 13, 2012 at 8:03 pm

Jackson, honestly what do you think anyone is going to find out? What do speculate has happened that is such a scandal it should bring down a Presidency. Do you speculate the President had the Ambassador assassinated? Do you speculate the President was on the side of the terrorist and wanted them to kill people? Do you speculate that Obama benefited in some way from these deaths? .

Or is it you hate Obama so much you simply want him to have done something horrible to justify your hatred.

Four Americans in the middle of a war zone and revolution were killed. It was tragedy. It was an intelligence and security failure. Its not a matter of national security and its not a scandal. Its never going to be a scandal, and it has nothing to do with Petraeus’ affair and resignation.

Under Reagan’s watch 200 Marines were killed by a bomb.

Under Bush’s watch, a plane was flown into the Pentagon, the Twin Towers and another was on its way to the White House.

Both of these were far worse security and intelligence failures, but they did not bring down a Presidency.

Regarding Fox. I try to watch Fox and Friends every now and then. They are totally infotainment. I watched the election on Fox and Karl Rove’s breakdown. But I do not have time to go on an Easter Egg hunt for the few bits of “news” Fox has buried among its GOP infomercials.

Jackson McPhee November 13, 2012 at 10:41 pm

“Bring down a presidency?” “Hatred for Obama?” You came real close to pulling out your typical race card BS there.

Speculate this… speculate that?

Where do you get this stuff? Certainly not from what I’ve posted here.

Evidence already out says there were many ways the consulate staff could have been protected ahead of the attack as well as during, and now we find out there was a “stand down” order. I assume you’re aware of these things.

If Obama gave that order or anyone answering to him did, there will be huge problems for him.

I notice you’re trying to change the subject again by bringing irrelevant events into this discussion. The Benghazi situation is not analogous to the things you cited because all signs are that this one could have been stopped while it was in progress.

Obama in a second term is going to attempt to go full speed ahead in implementing his leftist agenda with as much help from Harry Reid as he can muster. Did you hear Reid blustering last week about changing Senate rules?

I’m not quite down with that level of government control of my life and am thankful that the House can throw up a little resistance. Our government was designed that way and it will continue to work unless Obama continues to abuse the executive order pen.

And he can only do that so much.

sid November 14, 2012 at 8:30 am

Only Barry allowed an ambassador to be murdered, Jan, telling folks who could help to stand down while he and fellow Americans begged for help. The attacks under Reagan and Bush were surprises to all in scope, while Libya was not only easy to anticipate, there were ample warnings what was to come, and time to react to respond to the attack before the tragic deaths of Americans.

It is funny that an Obamabot like you tries to pretend you aren’t actually in love with Barry, and that you don’t actually hate Republicans, though. And if you are not joking, then you simply prove my point as to how delusional you are. Well done!

As for all news, they gave up the ghost of neutrality a long time ago. Some lean right, while most lean left. None are neutral, and it is probably safe to say none ever really were neutral. It is almost impossible for someone to completely eliminate their personal bias when reporting news, especially on issues of great importance or emotion.

How to Tell if You’re Involved in the Petraeus Scandal

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report) — In response to a high volume of panicked phone calls from the general public, the C.I.A. has published a new informational brochure entitled “How to Tell if You’re Involved in the Petraeus Scandal.”

The C.I.A. rushed to produce the brochure after it became clear that as many as one in three Americans may have some involvement in the Petraeus affair.

And with the scandal widening every day, “a lot of average folks out there are worried that they might somehow be involved in it without knowing,” says Carol Foyler, director of the C.I.A.’s public-information office. “This booklet should clear up a lot misunderstandings.”

The booklet includes a “simple, user-friendly checklist” that should help people determine whether they are at risk for being implicated in the scandal, she says.

“Have you ever met David Petraeus? Have you ever received and/or sent shirtless photos of an F.B.I. agent? Have you ever exchanged e-mails with Jill Kelley? Under five thousand pages of e-mails and you’re probably O.K., but anywhere between ten thousand and fifteen thousand pages of e-mails could potentially mean you’re involved in some way,” she says.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said today that he expected the Petraeus scandal to wind down by early 2015 but would not commit to an official timetable.

Are things incomprehensible and chaotic in the Arab world? Yes.

My son works in the US embassy in an Arab country and on Sunday I e-mailed him a youtube URL of the Prelude to Act 1 of Richard Wagner’s last opera, “Parsifal” (1882). It went to his living quarters which is near the embassy but uses local utilities, including the local Internet.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQOfIENN2tk.

His reply today:

~~~~~
Thanks for sending this note. I just tried to listen to the link and the [local government] still have a block on youtube! I can listen from the computer at my office, and I will listen to this opera piece first thing tomorrow morning.
~~~~~

Be grateful for the freedoms we enjoy in our only slightly-disfunctional democracy.

In many Arab countries, Paula Broadwell would already have been dismembered by a mob and David Petreaus would have already been shot by a military firing squad.

Might make a good fiction novel or movie, but the truth is not as glamorous.

He didn’t resign over the killings. He did resign over the affair and that’s because 1) it was more than just a roll in the sack and 2)he violated all he ever stood for as a leader.

That #2 still means something in the military.

Long argument ensued. “This makes us a target for the Taliban,” says friend.

“Shut up soldier. Take your orders. Wear your safety vest.”

Something like those $1,600 hammers and $1,000 toilet seats.

The whole system is fucked up. This time, the HMFIC got caught in the machinery.
