Big Brother wants you … to rat out your fellow Twitterers.
The U.S. Secret Service – which hasn’t been doing much tweeting in the wake of its embarrassing prostitution scandal earlier this year – recently fired back up its Twitter account.
The reason? A pre-election snooping effort aimed at exposing “concerning” social media behavior.
Take a look …
Really? Do they mean behavior like this?
This website has always maintained that law enforcement – including executive protection – is a core function of government (and should be funded accordingly). However our sense is that this effort is less about identifying credible threats against U.S. President Barack Obama (or GOP nominee Mitt Romney) and more about gathering information on those whose views diverge from the mainstream.

This seems pointless. I would imagine that the Secret Service can have (does have?) a server or two set up to scan twatter for threatening tweets.
The NSA does it for them.

You can see they are already profiling potential “terroists” based on the support of certain candidates.
If the opinions you express are controversial(to the establishment) you can bet you’ll eventually be considered an enemy of the state.

The Secret Service does a tremendous job and the fact that they’re looking at what people publicly post to determine if there is a threat to either the President or Governor Romney seems like a commonsense move more than a threat. Just think about how many times you would throw around accusations of incompetence if someone publicly tweeted a threat that actually came to pass…
Civil liberties no doubt entitle you to some degree of privacy and we’ve compromised that too much for safety in a lot of areas, but I don’t really think there is a presumption of privacy when you post something on Twitter for the whole world to see. If you post something threatening for the whole world to see, those views are not simply outside of the mainstream, they’re dangerous.
This does not concern me in the way that #AttackWatch did. That was done spefically for a campaign for a sitting POTUS, which was highly disturbing. And in this case – GOD how it pains me to say it – I have to agree with BigT. There really was some hateful threats directed toward Romney.
I fully supported Todd Kincannon in reporting a great many of them to the Secret Service and whoever else. He said he’d have done the same had the threats been aimed at Obama, and I believe him. It’s the patriotic thing to do, either way.
