THE ROLLER COASTER RIDE CONTINUES

Up-down. Up-down.

Gas prices in South Carolina continued their roller coaster ride this month – plunging from $3.62 for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline a month ago to $3.38 this week, according to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report.  That’s 26 cents less than the national average of $3.64 per gallon.

Gas prices in the Palmetto State began the year at $3.22 per gallon – fifteen cents below the national average of $3.37.  In April, prices climbed as high as $3.72 per gallon in South Carolina – compared to the national average of $3.90.

While our state’s prices are consistently among the lowest in the country … there’s a major catch.  Because South Carolinians are dirt poor (and getting poorer), they wind up paying a much higher share of their income on fuel costs.

According to a 2011 study, South Carolina ranks second in the nation (behind only Mississippi) in terms of the percentage of individual income spent on gasoline.  So while our gas may be cheap compared to other states, it’s not helping anybody’s bottom line.

What would help? Income tax relief … but that’s another story.

Speaking of taxes, in recent years several “Republican” legislative leaders at the S.C. State House have toyed with the idea raising the state’s gas tax – while one Democratic lawmaker (S.C. Rep. Bakari Sellers) has proposed a modest gas tax cut.  Yes, you read that correctly … Republicans in South Carolina want to increase the gas tax, while a Democrat is trying to cut it.

What are gas prices like in your neck of the woods?  Post your experiences in our comments section below …

SIC;

You find the most interesting gas pumps. I mean just phenomenal!!

My only complaint is that this is not a daily feature. Gas Pumps of SC!!

I used to go to Catalina Island, in CA. The original Mr. Clean set up in Avalon during the summer. He had a nightly slide show of the most beautiful water fountains. Every one of them on Catalina. Every picture of the same fountain was taken from a different angle. Every angle was simply breathtaking.

It was about a 45 minute show. Catalina has 3 waterfountains.

Fascinating.

Have a Great Day!! :)

That’s great news Jan. Now what you need to do is package that in campaign ads and see if that saves an Obama campaign that is circling the toilet and almost down the drain.

No Common Sense – blaming Bush just isn’t a winning strategy pal. You haven’t figured that out yet? LOL

Common Sense October 23, 2012 at 4:05 pm

keep ignoring facts joe..its all you got. The prez has nothing to do with gas prices yet you bring out that tired statement over and over and then when Jan mentions the stock market and Dow..you cant argue facts you just result to your usual small minded no facts replies. You are such an idiot hypocrite you dont even realize how stupid your own remarks make you sound, or your own hypocrisy ..lol. You are truly a tool.

NO NO NO SENSELESS.

You obviously have missed most of my posts. I wouldn’t vote for mittenhead if my life depended on it.

Why vote for the lesser of two evils. I’m voting for your buddy, Oshitforbrains. I intend to do everything I can to see that this fracking commie whore gets voted into office. Only thing is I tell the truth when I do it and I happily use my real name.

I make no excuses for why I vote for him. I’m not going to say he’s better or worse than Bushy (Republicrat). They are two sides of the same coin. Mittenhead is the other side. Kind of like an engineers fork. (Oh that’s just gonna twist your nads all day).

I’m voting for the evilist socialist commie I can find. Why vote for the lesser of two evils when you can have twice the pain at twice the price. :OP

Have a Great Day, senseless!! :) :PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP

Ah, yes, if only we could have another massive recession ejecting hundreds of thousands of jobs per month in order to trigger gas prices going under $2/gallon again. Great idea.

The record for the national average of the price of gas is $4.12/gallon, but that wasn’t under Obama. If Obama doubled gas prices, why isn’t gas $6/gallon or higher?

The only thing that will legitimately drive gas prices down is reduction in consumption of oil and reigning in speculation.

Will somebody tell me why diesal has not come down it used to be about 10 to 25 cent per gal. higher then gas,now its 50 to 80 cent per gal. higher. I think the oil cos. have bought off all the politicians, in both parties,no one is checking on price gouging.Run more pipelines, drill more wells ,and send the oil overseas ,and then i guess our gas will come back down to 1.00 a gal. this is all B.S. They need to outlaw all the lobbiest!

“Will somebody tell me why diesal has not come down”

Because we also export diesel (and gasoline). Fuel goes to the highest bidder.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/25/business/energy-environment/cheaper-oil-and-gas-give-a-lift-to-the-refining-business.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

” The price advantage of United States refiners over their foreign competitors helped the country last year become a net exporter of refined petroleum products for the first time since the late 1940s, producing nearly $10 billion in annual revenue from daily net exports of 370,000 barrels a day of gasoline and diesel.

Over the first eight months of this year, according to the Energy Department, those net exports have surged to 975,000 barrels a day. The country may be able to export another half million barrels of diesel fuel over the next few years, according to Thomas P. Barney, chief economist of Marathon Petroleum.

The export boom is particularly welcome because it comes as demand for gasoline and diesel fuel is sluggish in the United States and American refineries have excess capacity to meet local demands. But global gasoline and diesel demand is still growing, and closings of several Caribbean and European refineries in recent years have opened an opportunity. “

Thanks for the answer ,so we drive less saving fuel that is close to 4.00 a gallon ,so the oil cos. can ship it over seas, say we are short of crude, and rip us all off,but we want to drill more, run pipeline from canada to the gulf so the oil cos. can send it over seas, and whos going to pay for all the drilling and the pipeline?I still say this is the biggest ripoff in the history of the U.S.And what makes it so bad all the other cos. see this and follow, if the oil cos. can do this we can two, just look around at prices of everything, coffee went from 4.00 a can to 14.00 and 15.00 a can why? Because they can.All the utility cos. are jacking up prices too,We save more of everything so we can spend more money. The dollars are going to run out one of these days,There’s not but so many to go around!
