GAMECOCKS’ SACK MASTER ACCUSED OF PRE-GAME THREAT
University of South Carolina defensive lineman Jadeveon Clowney and another Gamecock player have been accused of threatening Louisiana State University quarterback Zach Mettenberger prior to Saturday’s SEC showdown in Baton Rouge.
According to The Shreveport (Louisiana) Times, Clowney and an unidentified Gamecock player approached Mettenberger as he walked out of the LSU locker room to warm-up for last weekend’s Top Ten battle.
“We’re coming for you, 8,” the unidentified player allegedly told Mettenberger, who wears a No. 8 jersey for the Tigers.
“You’re not going to make it through the game,” Clowney allegedly added.
“The player was Clowney and a defensive back. They were right out here when I went out to do warm-ups,” Mettenberger confirmed to the paper following the Tigers 23-21 victory over the No. 3 Gamecocks. “They definitely had a few choice words to say to me, but I’m guessing they’re looking dumb right now with the loss on their record. Obviously, it didn’t work out for them too well.”
USC sports information director Steve Fink did not respond to questions about the alleged Clowney threat.
LSU left tackle Josh Dworaczyk – whose job it was to block Clowney – told the paper that the threat motivated him and his teammates.
“One of the guys from their team went up to Zach and told him that he was going to make sure that he didn’t finish the game,” Dworaczyk said after the game. “The coaches heard. Some players heard it.”
“When you hear that, it elevates your game that much more,” Dworaczyk added. “It’s always your job to keep a quarterback clean, but when the threat comes out there, you step up and protect your quarterback with everything that you got. And I think our offensive line, backs and tight ends did a great job the entire night of doing that.”
They did. LSU beat South Carolina decisively in the trenches – particularly in the fourth quarter when an already worn-down defensive unit was repeatedly put back on the field thanks to inability of head coach Steve Spurrier’s offense to take care of/ move the football. Also Clowney – last year’s SEC freshman of the year and this year’s conference sack leader – did not record a sack of Mettenberger.
Clowney acknowledged that USC’s front seven “didn’t come to play” against LSU and that they would have to turn in a much better effort this weekend against No. 2 Florida.
He’s right … and they can start by saving their breath during the pre-game.

It was just probably trash talk, but even so they should have known better than to say anything like that to an opposing player cause it just makes the other team work even harder to beat you and make you eat your words. Just look at final score. Trash talking can cost you the game and in this case did.

I can’t believe I wasted 30 seconds of my life reading this article. My guess is that defensive players would probably threaten the opposing quarterback if given an opportunity before every game of football that has ever been played.
Yep. Trash talking at key times can upset your opponent to the point of disrupting their game. Even players that were thought to be “nice guys” at high levels do it….Magic and Bird used to screw with people all the time on the floor. That’s why their rivalry was so intense. They didn’t call Joe Green “mean” for nothing…those Coke commercials might have softened his image a bit but anyone that threatened Butkus with an ass kicking without response must have been a SOB.
It’s most effective in the heat of battle really, it’s just bulletin board material if you do it before. that was Clowney’s mistake.
Even then, when you do it it should be timed after a sack or a chase down for it to be effective…call it a proverbial additional nail in the morale coffin for opponents. It’s best delivered while on top of your victim…through the helmet while face to face with some spittle attached ranting and violent shaking.

I was at the game in BR Saturday night, watched Clown, let’s just stop there on the spelling, and he didn’t do much. He did get one sack though. He’s still a very young man with a lot to learn about letting your actions speak louder than your words.

One of the things I admire most about Marcus Lattimore is that he keeps his mouth shut and does his job. If he’s asked a question, he answers it directly and politely, smiles and then goes back to work. I wish Spurious could recruit about 60 more Lattimores.
However if I was an opposing quarterback, I’d sure be worried that there’s a trash talking Clowney on the D line who plays from whistle to whistle and likes nothing more than to get quarterbacks (and running backs and receivers) “dirty”. We’ve got a conference title. Earned another one on the field but the ACC it away. It got more liberal in not taking titles away from rule breakers, thus Clemson can still keep proudly wiping the dust off a 1981 title that is tainted.

Then they would brag that we would never win a national title in any sport ever. Believe the equestrian team title was the shut up there.
