ATLANTA WOMAN PULLED A GUN ON TREY GOWDY … BUT WHY?

We weren’t particularly high on U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy after he won South Carolina’s fourth congressional district seat in 2010 … and there have been  several key votes he’s cast over the last two years which have profoundly disappointed us (including this one) … but for the most part the guy has given us very little reason to complain.

More often than not he votes the right way (a.k.a. with fellow freshmen Reps. Mick Mulvaney and Jeff Duncan) … which is more than can be said for most “Republicans” in Washington, D.C.

Whatever we think of Gowdy, though, we would never want to see him (or any other politician) get blasted on … although that came close to happening on Sunday evening in Spartanburg, S.C.

Gloria Brackett

In one of the more bizarre incidents we’ve ever heard of involving a South Carolina politician (and trust us, that’s saying something), an Atlanta woman pulled a gun on Gowdy in the parking lot of the First Baptist Church in downtown Spartanburg on Sunday evening.  According to the city’s public safety director, the woman – identified as 52-year-old Gloria Yvonne Brackett – tapped on the window of Gowdy’s vehicle some time after 8:30 p.m. and accused him of following her.  She then pulled a gun on Gowdy, at which point he threw his car in reverse and peeled out of the parking lot (where he had gone to pick up his daughter from a church service).

WTF, right?

Police say that there is nothing to indicate a prior connection between Gowdy and Brackett – who had a .32 caliber pistol and a box of ammo in her possession at the time of her arrest – although Gowdy certainly isn’t elaborating on the incident.

“Mr. Gowdy is grateful to the Spartanburg Public Safety Department for their help last night and especially for helping make sure his daughter was safe,” a spokesman for the congressman told The Spartanburg Herald-Journal.  “Given the fact that this is an ongoing investigation with a subsequent prosecution, Mr. Gowdy will not be making any additional comments.”

Hmmmm-kay.

Brackett has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm as well as pointing and presenting the weapon.  No word yet on whether she will face additional charges from the U.S. Department of Justice or the Capitol Police given Gowdy’s status as a congressman.

Very, very bizarre …

How about some updates when you get them?

Lynn September 10, 2012 at 2:18 pm

Yet another example of someone with a gun who desperately needs mental health services.

The Colonel September 10, 2012 at 2:22 pm

What does “blasted on” mean?

Do you mean:
“he almost had a cap busted in his ass” or
“he almost got drilled” or
“he bout got iced” or
“he was almost given a fatal case of lead poisoning” or
“somebody almost opened up on him” or
“he almost got popped” or
“he was almost smoked”?

I agree with Tom though, ths one will need a follow up.

Soft Sigh from Hell September 10, 2012 at 4:15 pm

“Almost tapped,” maybe even “almost double-tapped.”

The Colonel September 10, 2012 at 4:29 pm

I notice you changed the title Will – easy to understand now.

Demo lite September 10, 2012 at 2:35 pm

Wait what??
It says he was there to pick up his daughter at the church.
He hauls ass and leaves his daughter behind with a gun toting “crazy”
person in the parking lot. Wow!

Carrie September 10, 2012 at 2:59 pm

That’s what I’m wondering.

Peter O September 10, 2012 at 3:17 pm

He went to the police station that was right down the street and came back to get her with a police escort.

Geez, you’re going to criticize him for THAT?!! So, what, he should’ve been a hero and gotten himself shot? What good would that have done?

Carrie September 10, 2012 at 3:33 pm

What if she went inside the church to look for his daughter? Thank goodness she didn’t. Apparently it was Gowdy she was after.

MountainPenelope September 10, 2012 at 3:37 pm

In S.C., particularly Sparkle City, they say 1+1=3.

I’m not buying it.

Frankly, this is typical of NRA GOTPers. Run for the hills when the gun is pointed at him, never mind his daughter could have walked out at any time.

Colonel: well Gowdy does chew nicorette

Orangeblood September 10, 2012 at 3:03 pm

I bet Insect won’t rate her higher than a “D”.

Insect September 10, 2012 at 3:37 pm

Generally unattractive, mannish-looking. 20 points.
Overweight, by a degree unknown (police photo dilemma).
Poor posture. 5 points.
Spooky eyes. 5 points.
Somewhat attractive mouth.
ROB (remainder of body) unavailable (police photo dilemma).

Incomplete.

How old is Gowdy; same age as this woman? She is 52 years old and is from Atlanta. How did she know where he was? If this was at a parking lot at a mall, I would consider her deranged, but this was in a Baptist church parking lot. Weird!

nofaith September 10, 2012 at 3:14 pm

DOJ needs to prosecute this as a hate crime.

The Colonel September 10, 2012 at 3:26 pm

Why, do you think she was an out of work hairstylist who hated his hair?

Nölff September 11, 2012 at 9:37 am

He does look like a troll doll when it’s windy.

johnb September 10, 2012 at 3:29 pm

This isn’t bizzarre if you know anything about downtown Spartanburg.

DogVomit September 10, 2012 at 9:24 pm

^ Exactly. Downtown Spartanburg is a shit-hole. No need to try to read anything else into it, FITS, this happens to the average joe here about once a week. This time the random crackhead just happened to approach Gowdy so it made the news.

johnb September 10, 2012 at 3:32 pm

How about the teen that was beat up in the walmart on East Main parking lot by a black gang.
Or the other one beat up in the same parking lot 4 weeks later.
Or all the house breakins on East side.
Spartanburg is turning into Dodge City. The Sheriff suggested everybody should get a gun and a weapons permit.

MountainPenelope September 10, 2012 at 3:39 pm

Guess Ms. Brackett took him at his word.

sid September 10, 2012 at 5:09 pm

If she was charged with unlawful possession, I’m gonna guess she didn’t have a permit. If she did have one from Georgia, it’s not any good in SC.

Crooner September 10, 2012 at 3:49 pm

Sounds to me like she was standing her ground while exercising her second amendment rights. She felt threatened by Gowdy. Who are we to question that?

Hell, I feel VERY threatened by Gowdy and his ilk.

Disclaimer: I don’t own a gun.

sid September 10, 2012 at 5:02 pm

Seems difficult to argue she was standing her ground when she had to walk up to him sitting in his car.

Phonebooth Bob September 10, 2012 at 5:15 pm

No, she was NOT standing her ground, and you either know that and are being a dipshit or you don’t know that and you are being a dumbass.

Andrew September 10, 2012 at 4:25 pm

Random crazy woman with a gun + deserted downtown on a Sunday night and the only thing with activity is 1st Baptist, which is right on Main Street.

Could have happened to anyone, just so happened Gowdy was the first one the crazy lady saw.

Lots of mentally ill folks roam our streets.

beacon September 10, 2012 at 6:02 pm

Prostitute?

Notagain September 10, 2012 at 8:02 pm

Look at this guy. Do you really want him representing you on the national stage? If so, well, bless your heart.

Mr. Dixie September 10, 2012 at 8:42 pm

If I saw somebody that looked like that following me, I would pull a gun on him too. He looks a lot more deranged than she does : )

Jeffy01 September 10, 2012 at 9:11 pm

He looks like that “girl” eckstrom is dating

Mirror Mirror September 11, 2012 at 3:03 am

Which one? Too many to keep track off these days.

Dan September 11, 2012 at 4:53 am

No prior connection???? He was the former prosecutor for Spartanburg. She’s probably related to someone he and his office wrongly prosecuted. He has a long history of abusing his power by prosecuting for favors or protecting against prosecution for favors.

notagain September 11, 2012 at 6:30 am

Comparing the two pictures, he looks crazier than does she. Note the hair and nose. Very strange countenance. I don’t think I trust him.

Mountain Man September 11, 2012 at 10:15 am

Any more on this story? The woman in the picture does not look crazy. She looks extremely angry.

Bill September 11, 2012 at 11:55 am

Ridiculous: Trey Gowdy, like all the other lame GOP new Congressman has helped destroy what little influence South Carolina has in Washington, DC. These Junior Congressman have no value to SC at all. We voted out senior Congressman for these worthless idiots.

These characters are the exact reason that if SC wants anything from Washington we have to beg Jim Clyburn to get it for us. There’s no one else with any seniority left.

This State needs to stop following this dumbass ideology and decide to get smart again. This small State needs senior people in Washington from both sides of the isle. Remember Stom Thurmond and Fritz Hollins, among others??

Then no matter who gets elected President: SC stays in control. Which is all that really matters: PERIOD!!!

sid September 11, 2012 at 12:23 pm

Um, OK, but these guys have the advantage over anyone else who you might support when it comes to being “senior Congressman” (sic). So I guess you are arguing to keep them around so they can continue to build up seniority, rather than dump them and start back at Go.
